I'm thinking it's a 240. Same air cleaner as my 240 (the 170 is over carb) and the carb is awfully close to the dog house. Does the intake manifold bolt on to the head?

Just noticed the tow hook. Is it a parts truck? If it's a 240, should have a 9" rear end also!

Looks like a swapped out 240 or 300 due to the oil filter being sideways and not upright like a typical 240.

so, how do I tell if it's a 240 or 300?
There has to be some kind of number on the head.

The 240/300 intake and exhaust manifold is bolted on the side of the head. The 170 has the intake made into the head.

Thanks Eric
but how do you tell the difference (visually from the outside) the difference between a 300 and a 240?

Cosmetically on the outside they pretty much look the same. Look at the part number on th bottom of the block. If the number is C6 it is a 240 block. If the number is D5 it is a 300 block. Ford made the 240 from 1965-74. The 300 1975-84 with carburetion. Then on with fuel injection until 1996 for the last year of the inline six. The other way is to measure the rod length. Hope this helps.

I'll look for the number..on a side note, since looking for a replacement engine, I came across an engine pulled at a local salvage yard....they say it's a 300 from a 1979....make sense?

I'm coming across a few 300's on ebay and craigslist.
I'd like to know what options I have before I buy.
Any way of determining if the 300 is in the 1975 to 84 group that will fit the add-ons from my 240 ...like the manifolds, fuel pump, fan pulley, etc.?

Remember this - The truck & van = 300 motors also came with a C-6 auto- much better than a c-4 & the tranny also fits the 289-351W engines!!

When you get a motor make sure it has the pickup truck oil pan and not the econoline van pan. The one on the econoline is a bit deeper and will not fit over the 240 crossmember.

thanks..that would have been a disaster trying to fit the engine to the mounts

I'm confused (but then again I confuse easily!), can't you take the oil pan off of the Econoline 240 and put it on the 300? I want a 300 someday too.

Carl that is a good question....
Since the blocks of the 240 and 300 are identical.....
The 240 oil pan should work....
what do u think?

The pans on the 240 and 300's are the same it is just the depths and the positions of the sumps are position differently. You can just take your stock 240 pan and put it on a early carbureted 300. Fuel injected 300's are a little different. I tried. It does not fit.

The 1975- early 90's econoline vans with the 300 the oil pan is deeper. It won't clear the early econoline crossmembers. They are to deep.

You are right...we had to switch the oil pans because the 300 oil pan bottom
was shaped different and would have hit the crossmember...
BIG THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP!
I could just see me trying to fit the engine down on the crossmember...

EVERYTHING externally will bolt up the same. Only a few differences, in fuellys no fuel pump mounting surface, and two different carb stud base differences in width. Some year carbs with slotted mounting base plate holes to bolt on either intake manifold. Dip stick, oil pan, water pump, motor mounts, bell housing, fuel pump, valve cover, intake and exhaust, alternator bracket, distributors,, all will interchange with each other.

Hey Vic
You are right. The only problem we had was the oil pan was going to hit the cross member. There was another slight problem though. The 240 had a dip stick tube through the side of the block. The 300 has a side mount to the oil pan. Now, since I did not use the 300 oil pan, I don't have a dip stick. There is however a bolt hole connection on the side of the 240 oil pan. I'll have to modify that bolt connection for a new dipstick. Any of you guys been there before and have any good ideas?
Vic, by the way, the pics that you sent showing the engine install helped quite a bit.
Thanks
Jim

Jim,,, over 2,000 pics?????? LOL..... You should have the same hole for the dip stick in the 300, but a small freeze plug in it. Simply remove it, install the 240 tube into it, and it will be the same setup. Ford was real good about things like that. I have a virgin 300 sitting here, but the oil pan got snagged from me and cant get it back. If the 240 pan fit in the Econoline, it will fit on the 300.
A TIP FOR REMOVING things like dip stick tubes, and head gasket steel rings. Put a TIGHT fitting Phillips head screw driver into the tube, and use Vice grips to turn it and remove it,,, for the head gasket rings I use a socket that also fits in REAL TIGHT, and vice grips, doesn't mess em up at all.

Hey Vic
If you need a 300 oil pan, I have one....
about the freeze plug or some kind of plug, there is not one on the 300 block in a place you would figure one to be for the dip stick.
I'll look again.....thanks

The 300 sixes were first brought out in 1965 in the truck series. They did not put them in the Econoline vans or trucks. They kept the 240 in these til later years. By 1970 the 240 was opted out for the more powerful 300 which had found its market not only in light duty trucks but large trucks like a gravel trucks.
So the 300 was at first only available to the trucks til about 68 and they put them in vans.
