    Post by score602 Tue Apr 06, 2010 9:33 am

hi guys, just bought a 65 with a 170 3spd., had no oil pres. found a 200 out of a 68 mustang just rebuild on craigslist. guy gave me flywheel, clutch, bellhousing and the trans.
get home and find out the bellhousings are different. bellhousing for the 200 is i believe a six bolt and is 6.25inches long compared to my original which is 5.5 inches. the trans that came with the 200 has a longer input shaft then my econo's.
i dont know what to do now =(

This is the place to be. There are a lot of guys that can help figure it out. My Chevy was a basket case when I got it in January, been driving it regularly for about a month now.

Can you put all the 200 and trans in then shorten/lengthen your driveshaft?

from what I read...the later 200 were drilled for both big and little bellhousings...my 68 block only has a big bellhousing bolt pattern or 6 bolt..
so now my next question is..i can use this other tranny..but the driveshaft is guna be really short. Is that ok?

Use your original Econoline transmission, bellhousing, flywheel and input shaft bushing. It will all bolt to the 200.

First off welcome, secondly where abouts on the Long island are you? Did you find the van on the Island ?

When I did my swap I use a 65 200 so I did not have this problem. If I remember right the 65 had holes for both bellhousings but the 68 only has the holes for the bigger bellhousing. I am going to be talking to one of my Mustang club members today who knows much more than I do, I will run it by him and see what he says.
At this point shortening the driveshaft sounds ok but how about all the clutch and gear linkage ?

The two I talked two said other than finding an earlier engine you would be better off using the tranny that came with the engine providing all the linkage lines up.
As far as the yoke there are a number of mustang parts guys around the island. If you want I can PM you some contact info.
Also you might want to go to The Flowerfield car show this Sunday. Its one of the better shows on the Island and a good size swap meet. You might find a yoke there.
