Called the guys at All Star glass a few weeks back and they said they could get me a new front winshield and new rubber for my 67 G10, but they wanted to check the van out to see if the rust was bad. So I drove it to their shop in Gardena couple of Saturdays back for the inspection. They thought it wasn't so bad so I went home and pulled the old delaminating chipped and hazzed glass out to have a closer look.
Yea there was rust, after 44 years what could I expect. The rust was enough to make the dashboard dinosaur pass out.
There were even a couple spots with holes. So I sanded, ground, and scrapped away the rust down to semi shiney metal.
Next I applied the high metal (aluminum?) anti rust primer,
After I patched the holes with JB weld and fiberglass, I layered on some of the thick epoxy coat in the glass channel that I have on the van. Of course it started raining once the glass was out.
I took the old beast last Monday back to the glass shop and after about an hous and $490 I have the new glass in place. After some extra sealer goop between the rubber and the glass and the body and the rubber there are no more water leaks (fingers crossed). Now that it is dry inside, I feel comfortable putting the new stereo in.
Looking foward to some beach runs with tunes.
