Fuel Tank Sending Unit Empty Fuel Tank Sending Unit

Post by southern man Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:04 pm

My gas guage doesn't work and we're getting no signal from the fuel tank sending unit. I'm guessing it needs to be replaced but as most of you know it requires the removal of the tank. Before I do that:
    A. Do you think my analysis is correct?
    B. I did a quick search for the part, and came up with this link:

    http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/?N=4294967069&Nr=OR(AND(make:Ford,model:Econoline,year:1964),AND(universal:1))&Vi=1616+10416+4294962392&y=1964&mk=Ford&md=Econoline

Does this look like a direct replacement, or does anyone know what might be a better choice?
    Thanks!

Your link doesn't work, but i think you mean these....

    http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/?N=4294967069&Nr=OR%28AND%28make:Ford,model:Econoline,year:1964%29,AND%28universal:1%29%29&Vi=10416+4294962392+1616&y=1964&mk=Ford&md=Econoline

They look like standard universal ones to me. You may get lucky and find out they fit. I asked a question on here about a year ago, and somebody found me one of something else that should fit.

I like that price,,,,,but those are held on by screws and use a smaller hole. BUT by taking off the resistance unit and mounting it on your old pick up tube, you could make it work like on this Chevy one.

I would see if there is a ground wire from the top of the fuel sender to the frame. Then disconnect the sender wire at the tank or at the next closest connector and briefly ground the wire going up to the gauge,,,,,,it should make the gauge go FULL,,,,,the gauge should read EMPTY if the wire is disconnected.

    Hey Southern,
Did you test your fuel gauge first? You can test it with a simple flashlight battery. I had to replace my fuel sending unit. I found one online that was an exact replacement for the stock unit and it works great. Here is the link to the replacement fuel sending unit.

Thanks primal! A bit pricey but I ordered it. Tired of having no gas guage. Yes, guage works.

I know it's a little more than other sending units but I figure that the few extra buck are worth not having to make any modifications and the frustrationthat come with the mods!
