We got a new alternator and still have the problem: While the van is running we take the positive battery terminal off to see if the motor will keep running with out the battery, and it does not. I have been trying to find out if the VR needs to be grounded, or is it grounded through the 4 wires comming out of it?

Your last post says everything is OK,,,,,so is there a problem or not?
,,,and anyways,,,,,the regulator grounds through its base to the doghouse bracket,,,,,there should be a wire there or a clip,,,,,,the 4 wires on the regulator are all hot wires,,,,,

If he alternator is working, it will be magnetized at the raer bearing housing. I was always told not to disconect the battery when motor was runnning as the alt. will run wild and burn its diodes out? pale

I would like to suggest checking the wires around the horn relay, all the 12 volt feed comes up from the starter to that point to be distributed doesn't it?? The coil is fed while it is running from the small starter connection but that is being fed from above by the Alt. when the bat. is disconnected.
