    What is the best way(easiest way) to remove a 250 from a 1967 van... My starter cranks this motor over just fine but I can hardly turn it over with a breaker bar attached to the damper. Spark plugs are out and this thing is just tight and decided I better go through it.

    Those are some great pics...LOVE that no door! Kind of hard to tell... I see transmissions laying around... Do you need to pull the tranny or are those extras laying around? Where are the chains attached to? Thanks for responding and being so helpful...this websight almost seems like the bible for vanners!

    I guess you could remove the front axle and lower the engine on the ground then lift the van up and drag it out. You need to take the transmission out to take the engine out the top. We pulled the StorageVan engine out through the side doors, but I had no choice on that No Door,,,,,But its real easy to pull it out the top,,,I did it myself.

    It sure turned out to be a busy Van year....I pulled out 5 engines and installed 2. You never know what the next Van adventure will be,,,,,,,
    Those fires sure are trouble,,,,,I still can't believe what happened last October out here when a million people had to run for their lives,,,,,,I stayed with my van,,,,,

    I'm going out the bottom with my V8, I don't see how it would come out the top?

    Looks like I am going to ditch the straight 6 and throw in a 350...I found a donor van with a awesome running motor and good auto transmission. The opening at the top of the doghouse is only 19" wide...I think if I remove the heads I can drop the motor in from the top and reinstall the heads once it's bolted in...but I'll see if I can jack the van up high enough to get the motor in from the bottom. I don't have a very tall ceiling in my garage so I'll have to see what happens. I wish these doghouse's only bolted in, boy would that make life alot easier. I'm going to have to find a different radiator that has a tranny cooler in it.

    When I did the engine in the original PolarBear we went up and in from the bottom and it wasn't that tough.

    Your so right, if the dog house bolted in life would be much easier.

    Now would be a good time to make life easier,,,,drill out the spot welds and replace them with bolts to make the doghouse removable,,,,,,,

    Oh sure, that's a solution, but I don't plan on yanking the engine in and out but once. My floor ang dog house are in perfect factory condition and that's how they'll stay. Its not hard going out and back up through the bottom.

    yeah, mine was a half ass job when i bought it , so i had to improve on it. but if yours is mint, just live with it being welded in. there isnt a mint condition item on my van...so its all an improvement.

    I'll be throwing in the 350 hopefully on 8/16...I'll post some pictures of the progress...I believe the v8 will go in from the top if the motor mounts and fuel pump are removed... I'd go in from the bottom but the ceiling in my garage is not all that high.

    I dropped mine in from the top. Stripped it down to the minium, no exhaust, etc. Used a tight chain attached to the top of the intake manifold. Rented a Cherry Picker and dropped it in short fashion. One thing to remember, is to have a nice smooth floor for the picker to travel over, made it real simple to change by myself. I have installed two different engines with this method and worked just fine!

    I love how there is no modification for the mounts... mount the ones up from the straight six and drop her in...went real easy although I had to remove the driver side mount and get that center bolt started then bolt it back to the block because it wouldn't go in straight and wanted to crossthread. But other than that it was a breeze.

    It might be easier to loosen the 4 crossmember bolts and move it around to get the bolts to line up in the motor mounts

    I've always drilled out all the spot welds holding the engine boxes in place. Use screws to hold box to floor afterwards. When pulling an engine, I usually remove passenger front wheel and rest axle on a block. Leave about 8" between axle and floor and it gives plenty of room to wiggle cherry picker around without a tire in the way. I put a V8 into a 5" chopped van with auto trans attached with no problem. Caulk perimeter of engine box and secure with sheetmetal screws.

    This thread just answered two questions I had at one time! I can put the V8 in from the top, and I can run a long water pump instead of the short. Nice! Is it best to come through the front door or the side doors?

    I went through the side doors with ease... I didn't want to take the chance of having the engine hitting the dash or dinging things up since I had my 15 yr old son helping me. Tons of room going through the side doors!

    Got the motor sat in place last night! Went very smoothly. Had a couple neighbors that gave me a hand. Can't wait to get it going!
