    Side Door Handle & Lock In-Op / 1968 Handi-Bus. Empty Side Door Handle & Lock In-Op / 1968 Handi-Bus.

Post by Guest Thu Jul 23, 2009 3:56 pm

I have a 1968 Handi-Bus with an issue I would like feedback on:

I can't get the side door to lock and I have a replacement door mechanism. A friend and I tried to remove the door handle to begin the process of installing the new mechanism, but couldn't remove it, even after removing the two main screws that hold it in place. We didn't want to force it off and risk damage. Any suggestions on how it get the handle off or is there a way to replace the door locking mechanism without removing the handle? (The key mechanism is fine, the reason the door won't lock is because the door mechanism is worn out.)

On a side note, I might be selling my beloved bus later in the summer or fall and although I don't want to part with it, I need the funds for my business, (sometimes work comes before play!) It is a great van with HUGE potential, but I'm not sure on where to begin placing a fair asking price....any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Nabor J

Tell ya one thing I found out after selling my "extra" 64 Ford van I had.

They do not bring even close to what one would think they would.

And I've found a window van is the least sought after type.

So unless $500 to $1500 is really gonna help your business, you'll be better off to keep that baby.

1- I predict in the near future the value will go way up

2- it may be worth most as advertisement for your business at this point. ( depending on the business)

    Best of luck though!

you need to pull off the horsehoe clip off the shaft inside the door for the handle to come off,,,,,,

And that latch assembly is the last to come out, so you need to remove the handle assembly and door lock cylinder first. So you reach in there and pull off that clip which lets the handle come off, which lets the escutcheon and its backing plate come out also. After you put the latch back in, install the clip on the escutcheon, put it back in the door, line up the backing plate inside the door and put the 2 screws back in,,,,,,,the last part is to line up the handle and just push it in to snap it back in place.

My side door wouldn't lock either and thought I was missing pieces or something? Ended up being the lock mechanism(not the key cylinder) that slides up and down was rusted in place... alittle wd40 freed it up. Thought I was going to have to buy new parts for mine but thanks to Donivan's million pictures it was an easy fix. Thanks Donivan!!!

Them there copper colored Autozone clips come in a pack of 9,,,,,,the big ones seem to work pretty good if your parts are not really worn out......
