    Ignition/door keys Empty Ignition/door keys

Post by Wyowanderer Thu May 26, 2022 6:32 pm

Can the ignition switch be removed from the dash without the key tumbler in it? I can pick the lock to move to the accessory position, but the tumbler is not wanting to come out.

Does the door and ignition key generally match on a van? If they interchange, I'll be tempted to pull the door lock(s) and let a locksmith make a key. I'm hoping it'll fit the ignition, which I lack a key to.

I'm also tempted to buy a new tumbler, drill out the old lock, install it in a new switch I've bought, and have the door locks made to match.

    Any suggestions?

Turn the key (pick) fully counter clockwise, push a paper clip in the little hole, and the lock tumbler should come out.

The ignition switch should be the same key as the doors, but I have seen many old Econolines where the ignition key is different. Usually because the ignition switch was replaced.

The key number should be stamped on the side of the passenger door lock.

A good locksmith should be able to disassemble a door lock and make you a key.

I don't have the ignition key - I've used a set of lock picks to turn the ign. lock tumbler to the ACC position but it doesn't come out. Will it come out without a key in it?

In the ACC position, push a paper clip in the little hole and keep turning the lock further counter clockwise.

Yup, key or no key, that's the trick - keep turning, and it just about jumps out.
    Thanks!
