Sloppy three speed column shifter

I could use some help trying to figure out how to get my truck to shift better. Finding 2nd gear is a bear, 1st, 3rd and reverse don't seem to be too much of a problem. Is there any resources available online to help me figure out how to adjust the linkage or whatever other parts might need adjusting?

Basically, you put the shift into neutral, then loosen the shift rods at the transmission and then stick a philips screwdriver in the hole from the cab, align the shift arms so the screw driver passes through the alignment holes and then make sure the tranny shift levers are in nuetral and retighten at the tranny. Also, make sure the rods are freely moving through the support member next to the engine. Beyond that they may need repair or rebuild.

The only book I have is the Chiltons that covers 61-88 econolines, came with the van. Some of the ford service manual are available in pdf form for a modest fee.

The original Ford shop manuals are available on e-bay. I bought one for my '65 that way for not much money.

G-vans have a similar procedure, just loosen the rods and find a nice smooth neutral position for the shifter then tighten your rods at the levers on the trans.  If you have lots of wear and play in the rods and bushing, do a trial and error adjustment of each rod end until you get it working.  With my shifter adjusted for neutral, it still wouldn't go into first after a stop, turned out all it needed was a 1/4" lengthening of the rod to get to work properly, you can feel if the levers are in gear at the trans so you'll know if the rods are moving enough or not.  Helps to have a helper in the seat to move the lever for you while underneath checking the movement....ask the wife/GF/child or dog to help! LOL if all this fails, like said, could be bad syncro or worse in trans, how's your clutch? A clutch not fully disengaging can prevent shifter from going into certain gears with the main shaft still spinning.
