    vapor lock Empty vapor lock

Post by chainsaw Mon Sep 14, 2015 5:57 pm

Can you have vapor lock when the engine is not up to temp (under 180). If the vent hose is blocked would that cause vapor lock like symptoms ? The truck just started doing what I thought was vapor lock, it dies, no gas to carb ,sit for 5 to 10 minutes then starts right up. Does this if hot or cold. Just pulled tank, looked very clean. replaced electric fuel pump, (was there when I got the truck) all filters and hose from front to back. Only thing I havnt messed with is the vent tube. Any other ideas ? Does the gas cap need to be vented? Thanks.

I would start by checking the vent tube, then the fuel pump. If the vent tube is open, you shouldn't need a vented cap.

If you look up into the drivers side rear quarter you will see the vent hose tubing. That is the area where it makes bends up to a rigid u tube. It comes off an elbow on the top of the tank, straight over thru the frame, bends up to the u tube and back into another hole in the frame. If you don't see any kinks where the hoses bend up and back, pull the exit tube out of the frame and examine it. Then remove the fill cap and blow through the vent tube and see if it's clear.

Plugged vent could definitely cause that problem but a plugged filter can act nearly the same. As the bowl runs out of fuel it starves the engine either way. Sometimes fords have a small metal filter screwed to the carb inlet.

that would be a good place to start,,,,,,,if it makes a difference then we know the problem is the tank,,,,,,,,if it don't make a difference, we move on to another section until we find the problem......

where is the electric pump located ?? they are built to push not suck. if it's mounted high in the engine bay the pump could be doing that. it should be mounted low so the gas would flow to the pump. the pump should also be away from heat,

after doing all =stated above! Get the mechanical pump back on the engine!! So many e's owners have replaced the old pumps with electrics as mechanical pumps couldnt be found or elect's were cheaper!! There are new mechanical pumps available for these different size ford engines. Just need a good auto parts guy to find a listing -try rockauto.com-- look @ seversl year & sizes engines & look @ listings for mustangs, flacons too -not just econos!! cheers

Vent tube was clear but hard so replaced it, ordered new sending unit and rubber hose between tank and fill tube. DID find a 1'' x 1'' piece of loose solder ? in the tank so tank is clean now. Took carb off ,pulled top off (edelbrock carb) looked clean but sprayed cleaner in all the holes I could find. Just waiting on new parts to come in so I can put it back together. Pump is mounted low on frame by tank away from any heat source, gas will run down to it. Filter before pump and after.

Electric fuel pumps are voltage devices, that is hey higher the voltage the better they work, up to a point. They need to have about 11 volts to work at all. IN many cases I have found that the wire running to the pump was too small and the voltage at the pump had dropped to the point the pump was not effective. In particular as the pump warms up its internal resistance rises and that drops voltage even more. You should check the voltage across the pump and see what you are getting back there.

You've got a V8 in there and a 4 barrel... Does the float/needle appear to be moving freely?
