Hi, I ended up with this transmission, and am trying to find out where and what years it was used. It is a heavy duty GM Saginaw 3-speed. I believe the tailshaft housing mount is for a van. I want to sell it, but I don't have enough info for what it fits. Thanks

Yes, it is a 3 speed saginaw (Saginaw transmissions are certainly NOT "heavy duty" LOL, they will grenade if abused with a torquey v8 if front of it… ask me how I know, hahaha), It does have the van tailshaft housing for use in an early van.  The application is correct for 66-70 chevy/gmc van..  it will fit the 64-65 chevy/gmc van, but may require changing out the output yoke for the driveshaft.

I note no grooves in the input splines.  According to this site http://www.gitdirt.com/gm3speedsaginawratios.htm No grooves means that transmission should have a 2.85:1 first gear ratio, but please confirm that information by turning the input shaft and observing the number of rotations of the output while the trans is in first gear.  The 'groove' number vs. gear ratio information is not always accurate, so it requires visual confirmation.

Thank you for the info. Yes, it does have a 2.85:1 first ratio. I bought it in order to do a classroom discussion on how gears and synchros function in a transmission. I was just looking for any old 3, or 4-speed tranny and found this for sale. I disassembled and cleaned it, and when the class was over, reassembled it with new gaskets, a new tailshaft bushing, and new rear seal. It is perfect inside, with no chipping or wear on the gears, and like-new synchros. It probably never got much use. I used to rebuild these for a living back in the late '60's, so I know it's a good unit. I put it on Cincinnati C/L for $125. Good price?

Not a bad price, but I would bet you'd have an easier time selling by listing  it here

That is a 66 to 70,,,,,,,,WAY better than what is in the 64 and 65's,,,,,,,however,,,,,,you need some of the 66-70 shift linkage to make it fit in a 64 and 65,,,,,,,,,I have one of those in my 65 right now,,,,,,,,

I wasn't sure of what it was for; that's why I came here. If I can figure out the classified listings I'll list it here. I wanted to sell it locally as I really didn't want to ship it.

Thanks! I used to ferry my boss's North American T-28C Trojan from South Florida to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, usually twice a year. The pic is a selfie taken over the Rockies at around 17,500 feet. Have to be sucking the oxygen at those altitudes.

That's a fair price. Consider shipping it with UPS or FedEx ground. Nationally, it is likely someone needs it. Locally, its unlikely you will find a buyer. I have shipped these transmissions before. Its not that hard. Just pack them well in styrofoam and protect the input shaft. Double box it in cardboard.. they will make it. Your buyer will be glad to get one if they need it, and will be happy to pay for shipping.

Thanks. I'm really hoping to sell this locally as back problems prevent me from horsing this around too much, which is what I'd have to do to package and ship it.

You are seriously limiting your potential buyer audience if you will not ship it.

I understand and appreciate that. But, I'm not asking much, so I don't have a big stake in this. Before wrestling this thing around, I would just call a scrap guy to come get it. Too bad though, because it's like a new transmission. We'll see where it goes on the local C/L, or if there is anyone nearby from this forum who needs it.
