    Here's another real rookie question...

    Judging by the VIN, I had assumed there was only one /6 engine available in '65, but when I tried to order a starter I am seeing two options...  Do I need to get a casting # off the engine??  Anyone have a part number for the one I need?  Thanks!!

    With out looking i thought  the vin plate told you what engine it came with , But a lot of engines were swaped out so a  castin # would tell the story.

    All the VIN says is V6 or V8...  That is why I assumed it was only one 6.

    Apparently there is a 170 and a 225 available.  How can I tell which one I have without a casting #? Sorry for the newbie questions...

    ask your auto parts store if the starters were differernt ???? i didn't think they were.  Have them look up a 225 / 6 then the 170 /6,

    and there is the problem right there in print. they are to young to know and rely soley on a computer screen that was programmed by someone who had no clue about what the differences are. there was differences for sure, in h/p rating not in style. i'll bet a bunch if you found an old reduction type starter from a 62 valiant /6 it would bolt up to a 97 jeep with a 318 and work just fine. because the world relys on what a phone or computer screen says nowadays that is what we are led to believe. old, antique, prehistoric guys like me know different but the world dosen't rely on us because we are to old to know anything.
    now to answer you question;
    old reduction gear starters are very interchangible with just about any engine/transmission combo. or you could upgrade to a starter from a newer dodge (92-98 ) v-8 nippondenso style reduction gear and only have to change the wire for the starter solioned to make it work.

    sorry about the rant...........Very Happy:D

    It was my experience with a 64 170 that the only difference with starters on the slant6 was with manual, or auto trans. Engine size of the /6 doesn't matter as its the same block.
