Re: headers for a 318
let me get some oppions, should i get a rebuilt engine, or just have a valve job done on my heads and get a 4 brl. carb with intake from summit, i only have 110.000 miles on the engine,it only smokes for a second when i start it after its hot, i know thats valve seals, no knocking or any other problems,

Do you have an oil pressure gauge? If it is running good pressure, I would just freshen up the heads and go for the intake and carb set up. My engine has about 50k miles on it, I put an Edelbrock performer intake and 600 cfm electric choke carb on it a while ago and it really woke that engine up! Nice performance for sure.

Re: headers for a 318
yeah i have good oil presure, that might be the way to go, if ever the engine blows i'll still have the intake and carb to swap out, do you remember the part #s of the intake and carb and did you get it as a combo, thanks Tom

Re: headers for a 318
My standard "old v8 hot rod upgrade" was "carb/cam/intake/headers and sometimes electronic ignition", its a basic performance improvement.
I never ran custom heads but always had my factory heads refreshed/reworked with new seals etc.
low profile dual plane 4bbl intake (wieand, summit edlebrock or whatever)
edelbrock 600cfm carb with mechanical secondaries (personal preference) and elec choke
headers, dual exhaust.
When I build the new engine for my van its going to be as above with the exception of high flow water pump, high flow oil pump etc. since the van engines tend to run hotter than I like in GA.

Re: headers for a 318
yeah slowflapper, thats what i'm going to do, but i need to get my rad. converted to a 3 core, valve job, headers, just header mufflers no pipes, 4 brl. and intake, i think doing all that will be a great improvement, next on my list when my check gets here i want to reline my fuel tank, then do the radiator, the engine can wait till next fall, i want to be sure its running to go to the nationals,

did you need to buy anything else like bolts or pipe fitting for the bypass hose?

Re: headers for a 318
I know I had to buy a 1/2 male pipe to 5/8 hose barb fitting for the heater hose, and if I remember correctly the 3/4 male pipe to 3/4 hose barb for the bypass hose came with it.

Re: headers for a 318
I need to do some more research, but I am having a hard time finding a set of headers that won't interfere with my 3 speed shift linkage. I want my intake and carb set up to perform as designed, but not at the expense of reliability. The headers I would think about running have to be at least a 5/16 flange. Has anyone ran block hugger type on these old girls?

Re: headers for a 318
I just order a set from Summit that should be here monday or tue. I will prob dummy them up soon as I get them (waiting on my Gear drive and Cam to show up before i get everything buttoned back up for real) so I will let you guys know how they fit and/or if i need to move a tube a little or anything like that. The Love machine has a auto so not sure if that will help those that have a man tranny but least you will have a idea of fitment. they also come with gaskets/hardware and flanges to go from the headers back.
here is the part # from Summit
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g9042
I also went with a set off Thrush Welded mufflers rather than Flowmasters. Got the pair for 60 bucks to my door and they are great quality and from the youtube vidz I checked out they sound every bit as good as Flowmasters. The only issue I was able to find in my research was possible rust issue but that was only one guy that living where they salt the roads but that was 3 years after he bought them and doubt I will have that issue here in sunny central cal and even if i did for how much I saved I could fire another set on three yrs down the road and still be better off than grabbin the Flowmaster. just thought i would let you guys that are doin your ex know that they were good quality and sound.
Side note.... WTF was i thinking going with 3in system??!! The mufflers and tubing/turndowns I just got are HUGE LOL Least i will be able to piss off the old lady across the way with those and the Thumper cam/gear drive i am firin in ol girl
