TIMER SWITCH for electric fan Empty TIMER SWITCH for electric fan

Post by Casimier Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:29 pm

    Hey All

I know I read it someplace in one of these topics.

Who was able to find a mechanical TIMER SWITCH for an electric fan?

The vanner turned it on when he parked his van to dispurse the carb fumes.

    Please help.

I heard of some using a 120 volt household timer. Sounds kind of hokey to me but whatever works.

I installed the same system on mine in the same location. There was already a hole there and it mounted right up. It's got an off white knob that matches my choke knob and looks like it's supposed to be there. Works great!

Hey Donivan- in the pic of the switch under the dash? Could that be a pencil stabilizer stuck in the speaker grille?? We should have a detailed report on that mod-looks interesting to me ?

Where do you get the switch and fan from? Would like to look at something like that for mine as it gets that engine smell in it after a good drive.

Well,,,,,,,that timer is for a house ceiling fan,,,,you can find it in Home Depot, like $15,, right next to the electrical switches and wall outlets,,,,and it is rated up to 120 volts,,,so it handles 12 volts easily,,,,its just a switch that stays on if you wind the spring knob for a certain time,,,they come in 15 minute and 60 minute versions,it is exactly like a kitchen timer,,,I twist it on when I park my van, the fan runs up to an hour,,,the timer unwinds and shuts the fan off,,,you set it and forget it,,,and as for the fan, it HELPS your cooling system,,,it will drop your temperature down,,,especially at idle since if you aint movin, you aint coolin in our vans,,,it keeps the doghouse, AND YOU, cooler,,it cools the engine and carb down,,,so no more gas smell and hard hot starting,,,I would NEVER leave home without it,,,and at the 1/2 price Pik a Part sales out here,,,,they are $15,,,just laying under the cars since everybody just takes them off to get the radiator out,,,,mine is off a Honda

,,,,,you are looking at my cup holders,,,,,a piece of wood,,,,2 pieces of 3" black PVC pipe slotted for coffee cup handles,,,,,a long screw with some brake line over them as a spacer to hold the top to the grille,,,,,no speaker there,,,,,they are behind me up in the wall behind the front seats,,,,,there is a Holley knob that is a choke cable that goes to a heater control valve under the floor to regulate the coolant flow to the heater core,,,,,

As a matter of fact,,,,,,I use those timers a lot,,,,,I got one made up for 12 volt stuff and another for 120 volts,,,,its really good for 12 volt things that you don't want left on killing your battery,,,,I like to set the fan when going to sleep,,,,,or leaving something on when you leave the house,,,,,

I thought I'd add this post to the thread since I borrowed the idea from Donivan....

My van would run fine as long as it was moving...but the heat soak was a huge problem when I would park or get stuck in traffic. 5 minutes after I shut it off the fuel would percolate out of the carb making it difficult to start. The integral head didn't help matters any.

The PO had installed a pusher fan on the front of the radiator. Combined with the fiberglass insulation they had used to line the front of the doghouse and there was no room left for airflow from the belly pan. The fan covered probably 75% of the radiator and the insulation was right up against it.

I pulled all the insulation out, and  moved the fan down below. I used my own variation by mounting it with some standoffs to the belly pan itself. That way if I remove the belly pan it comes with it and doesn't interfere with servicing the front of the engine from below.

I used a 60's vintage Packard wire connector to make the hook-up look somewhat factory.

In this new location, it does not interfere with the normal air flow supplied by the belly pan louvers but is ready at the flick of a switch to supply a boost of fresh air when parked or stuck in traffic.

I fooled around with different angles on the fan to get it aimed just right so the fresh cool air forces the hot out of the doghouse and reduces the heat soak.

Viewed from above....before you couldn't even see the front of the radiator ..plenty of room for air flow now

I don't know what this fan is originally from but it really moves some air. (check the video).

For a timer I turned to my stash of old slot car equipment. It comes from a 1960's AMCR power supply that was used to rent track time on the big commercial 1/24 scale tracks back in the day. It can be set to run up to one hour and even has a "hold" position. Those slot cars ran on 12 to 20V DC at high amps so it's perfectly suited for this application.

I was even able to use the original jeweled glass red indicator lamp.

I just need to add my own custom label to the bottom.

As Donnie has pointed out, now when you park it to get gas or run into a store for 5 or10 minutes you can set the timer and walk away knowing it will cool off and not run the battery down too far. The "hold" feature is nice on hot days if you're stuck in traffic.

Between scrapping the integral head and swapping to the early head, moving the fan down, installing a 5 blade steel fan (ditched the crummy flex fan that was on it), and adding a Flow-Cooler thermostat I'm quite confident that my cooling and heat soak problems will be a thing of the past. Thanks to Donivan for the inspiration.
