Inherited a special van
Hello everyone. I'm new to vans but I've inherited my late uncle's 1970 Chevy panel van. I had the pleasure of working out of the van with my uncle after I graduated years ago. We'd pack the van full of his wood carvings every month and travel the entire west coast from Washington State to the southern border of the country. We lived out of the van during these trips which was quite the experience with my dead head hippie uncle. I'm a small town boy from Oklahoma so I was shown a whole new world and the van was a major charachter in this saga. To make a long story longer my aunt recently gave me the van after it set idle for 6 years. My uncle had a new head gasket in the back so I was suspicious of the motor. I got it running but she ran very poorly after a carb kit and tune up so I decided to do a complete master kit overhaul on the motor which I'm in the process of now. The motor looks pretty good except for a crack in the exhaust manifold (open to suggestions on finding one). Everything else just needs cleaned up and retuned. My uncle also brought his family to Okla. every year for the holidays in the van and being from Washington State, I'm posistive the van has a million miles on it. The van itself is very solid, no rust, all the lights and everything work great. I have learned a lot from you guys reading the forum already but now I'm prepared to start asking questions. Still haven't found a manual for the van itself and I'm really not sure which of the many versions I have. Thanks for all the knowledge I"ve gained already and thanks in advance for future help. Any info you can give about the old van will be appreciated. She's got a 250 in her and the two side doors. Windows in the back doors but not the side doors. Here she is

First, Sorry to hear about your uncle. As a veteran of 40+ Dead shows I can say he and I share a lot of memeries and we (probably) never met.
Secondly, Welcome to the site. That is a great story you have with the time you spent with your uncle and the van. Reminds me of the Grateful Dead tune "Me and My Uncle".
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer your questions as I cannot.

Wow, that was fast. Thanks for the info. Right now I'm looking for the knuckle? or gear box for the driver's side window. The old one is shot. Also need to install new locks to get her closed up tight. Right now I'm holding the window up with a board and keeping it parked near a very large dog.

Re: Inherited a special van
The key cylinder just pushes and pulls a horseshoe lever up and down to lock and unlock the doors,,,,you can just reach in there from the inside to operate the lever,,,,,if you don't have a key,,,,take the cylinder out and see if there is a number stamped on it,,,,a locksmith will make a key for it from that code number,,,,,the window regulator operates the windows,,,,,you can take it out and check if the spring is working and tighten the handle shaft with a hammer to maybe make it work better,,,,,,also remove the philips screw ABOVE the armrest and put a longer one in there to keep the window from going down,,,,,,

The cylinder for the lock is completely missing on one door and the windows seems like gears are trying to turn but slipping. if I lift the window as I turn it will kind of roll up but it won't stay up. I'll take it apart and see what I can find out. Thanks for the tips

What goes on the arm once you put it in the hole to keep it together? There's nothing to keep the end of the arm from popping out. I was going to rig something up but wondered what was supposed to keep it in place.

must be loose against the track because unless I hold it in while I roll it up it falls out.

Re: Inherited a special van
There is a weatherstrip that runs from the top front inside the door channel all the way back down into the bottom of the door,,,,,and the vent glass channel also has a rubber weatherstrip in it,,,,,so when the glass is up,,,,3 sides of the glass are held in place by rubber channels,,,,,
