carb and distributor questions Empty carb and distributor questions

    Post by h2omonkey Sun Aug 14, 2011 6:17 pm

Done a lot of reading up on my new 65 and now have questions about carbs, i have a 170 with the autolite 1101 and the load-o-matic dizzy, 3 speed tranny. This combo is confusing with the spark control valve controlling the advance in the dizzy rather than centrifugal weights. If i change the dizzy to a duraspark or dui, (petrronix wont work well due to dizzy not having mechanical advance) can i still use the autolite carb by blocking off the spark control valve line and pulling vacuum of the intake? What other carbs fit the stock 170 intake. I've read the articles at fordsix, classicinlines, and pony carbs and there are some contradictions. Thanks for the help.

If you have the bucks a Weber carb will work and Mallory Unilite distributor. Try Clifford performance. Pony carbs are nice but they are a bitch to adjust.

    Hey Tony,

    First off, welcome aboard!

I've built several 170's and a few 200's. Had the
exact same issue. If you have the funds I highly recommend
the DUI combined with the Pony 1100 Vaporizer. I know some
people may not like the combo, but firsthand I can tell
you it is one of the smoothest set-ups I've come across.
I also recommend working with both manufacturers on the phone
describing what you want out of your engine. I got a brand
new carb from them (he didn't rebuild mine, which they do...)
and it was already adjusted. In fact, I made it a point to not
even touch a screw, and sure enough the engine purred like a kitten.
Jon said he mounted every carb on their test engine and tuned the
carb "don't touch it" he half-joked. ha!

I have some video of my 200 on initial start-up on YouTube:

Might have to turn it up a bit, but that engine is not even
dynamically balanced, and always had a jumpy idle with the
Load-A-Matic. I slowly build up the rpms to about 3500 then
drop down for a few blips on the throttle. (Excuse the initial
sound quality something about the auto focus)

The difference is night and day...
