I think I might check out some rear A/C units for long wheelbase late model vans. Combine that with one of the 'Vintage' underdash units, and grab the rest of the components from the late model, might just be able to piece together a decent system.

Building the actual blower unit I don't think would be that tough, it is the compressor that worries me. Thank you for the pictures Don.

I checked out the crank pulley on the 66 and it has 2 belt locations. Very interesting.

my first 108 panel van had an underdash ac unit
in it and with only the front one working, it only
kept you from sweating, not comfortable, more like a tease. (once the sun went down you were running for a blanket)
and that was using a very dense curtain behind the front
seats, you really need a rear unit also to get really comfy
in the heat of the day, the next one I aircondition will have front and rear air.

I have a buddy that tints windows at a car audio shop, he is going to install 20% tint on all the back windows and 35% on the front. They are also going to sell me some sound deadening insulator in bulk at their cost. I can't remember the brand name, I will report the name when I pick it up. They used it on a guys Dodge Power Wagon and it helped ALOT to drop the interior temp according to them.

I am also planning to run both front and back units. I seen the Pull-A-Part has a 1997 and a 2001 van. Both these should have the R134 setups?

i have said all along a rear a/c system is the way to go it will blow the cool air all the way forward.and there is junk yards full of ways to make it work the best i see is like the old chevy conversion vans had but this would only apply to those still installing a inside to there van a lot of those units were a/c and heat and used duck work mounted up top along roof some also can be ducked to the bottom of floor nice thing about thease is you can mount them out of the way inside a wall under a bed.also good doner is min-vans windstar and so on.i,m no where near installing a/c yet but i will and can do it i use to work on split a/c systems on shuttle buses for a liveing.

Here are just a few snapshots, this is something I will probably be doing next year, just not high on my priorities right now.

The main thought here was to find a compressor mount that would fit in the Doghouse.

These pictures are not of engines in a Van, just a reference.

These brackets look like the compressor is close enough where it will fit.

Take what you want from this, it's just my beginning research..

Thanks for putting this up Scott. Turns out this guy lives about and hour or so away from me. I emailed him hoping he'll give me the address to his shop. I'd like to see what he has/can make for brackets that'll fit in the doghouse.

Yeah, it looks like the placement of that one might stick out too far. Maybe he could custom make something that went down below on the right side like those pics Don posted earlier.
