    Balancer question Empty Balancer question

Post by Stoopid john Mon Jun 27, 2011 8:32 pm

I was told my 1967 A100 van has a 1975 slant in it. I found a casting number sheet and the head matches to a 1975, that's good.

Checking over the van i found that the balancer has spun. So, this is my problem

The balancer has two belt grooves, my setup uses the groove closest to the radiator. But, the part that has the timing marks and the groove i need, bolts to the first groove pulley with the hub attached. The bolts that hold it together, come in from the timing cover side (no way to un-bolt with it on the engine)

Is this normal? I found a place that rebuilds balancers and they list a 2 groove balancer but i don't know if that's what i need. I want to keep the 2 groove for a/c later and the water pump pulley lines up with the added groove.

    thanks

Yes it is you'll need a puller to remove it from the engine depending on clearance you may need to remove the radiator.

I got a good picture of the balancer. Is this normal for the A's?

Do you have timing marks on that timing cover? I see a notch and a magnetic timing light bracket but no numbers,,,,,,

No numbers, i've been using a timing light with the advance knob. I set #1 to TDC and made my own mark.( Nothing lined up with anything)

I've also got a kind of knocking/ rattle sound too. If i pull off the belt, it goes away. I replaced the alt, do to over charging and i just replaced the water pump too. The noise is still there. If i can figure out what i need for a balancer, i want to do that and throw a timing set in it too.

It's looking to me that they used the old balancer on the newer engine and the timing tab does not match,,,,,,,maybe the original timing cover has a tab with the numbers on it,,,,,,,,

But that don't get you back in time,,,,,,the notch can be anywhere but it needs to line up with the numbers and the numbers can be anywhere,,,,,,but they must be a matched set,,,,,,and it looks like they changed positions of where the numbers are,,,,,,,,,so you kind of need to match the timing cover to the correct balancer,,,,,,,So guys, where are your timing mark numbers on your engine??? at the 11 oclock position or 2 oclock????
