electronic ignition question..
i changed my old 1966 /6 for a 1979 super six from from an Aspen , i'm very happy with the result, the accelerator cable, exhaust, everything looks at its place. But my problem is what to do about the ignition system? buy a new kit or keep the distributor and find an electronic box and try to fit it with the original wiring of the van?? what did you guys do?...thanks for your help

Re: electronic ignition question..
I bought the electrinic conversion and kept the existing electrinic dist. for a spare.but your alt. is a single field. if you have a alt. with the engine that is duel field. you have to add a 2nd field.also you will need to update the voltage regulater.and a fuseable link. look into the older post on the electrinic conversion. it helps. also donnievan is very helpfull and knows what he talking about.he will not steer you wrong.!!!!!!. i will also look for the link,,,,,,

Re: electronic ignition question..
The nice thing about a factory setup is that part stores have the parts normally in stock while aftermarket unit part have to be ordered. If the Crane Cams unit in mine starts acting up it's getting replaced with a factory setup.

Re: electronic ignition question..
pertronics units are self contained and a snap to install. did 2 big block dodges for a friends boat and haven't spent any time in the bilge adjusting points for three years now

electronic distributor conversions
My 2 cents= Im still a points type guy-YET!!= In 1972 -I installed a Petronix type unit-From Hays (one of the 1st) electronics points eliminator units=in my 1967 vette- Ive never had any problems with it in all that time up till today - Still working Great and I have also used the pertronix units since they came out-Hays sold their units (patents) to someone long time back- maybe petronix?? Petronix is the only after market magnetically triggered unit on the market(like Hays was) There are some others (Mallory) that have the light triggered units. Id buy peteronix today before anyone elses. Very simple units.Ill also add = never leave a Ign. key on & jump start any vehicle or replace a battery doing the same key on Thingy!!It will kill some systems electronic ignition systems.

Re: electronic ignition question..
I think the pertronix II unit I had was light triggered. they also have a protection against the "key left on" scenario
"Senses incorrectly wired Ignitor II or a "key left on" condition and shuts down the system protecting the coil and other components from damage"

Re: electronic ignition question..
my memory just kicked in, the pertonix we have is magnetic fired, I've also used several crane xr-700 electronic ignition conversions. those use LED light and have an external brain.
