You need about 1" to 1 1/4" of weather strip thickness in the lid channel to seal it properly. If you look at the dog house itself you'll see a metal edge sticking up that's about 3/16th of an inch tall. That edge is supposed to press into the rubber seal in the dog house and seal it up.

I ended up using weather stripping from O'Reilly Auto Parts here.

I used a 3/4"x3/4" high density foam strip in the lid and had to use a 1/4"x1" piece on the doghouse edge to make up the total thickness. I'm going to move the piece on the dog house into the lid as well just so it looks better.

It doesn't matter where you get the material just as long as it's thick enough to seal, also be sure to get high density foam and not the cheap stuff.

    Here's some picts:
The gasket needs to be a little thicker the the edge of the lid (you can see it isnt quite there)

Here's the extra piece I added to the doghouse (white strip), im going to move it to the lid as well:

I got mine fom soff-seal. The part # is E-703, you'll need 10 ft and a tube of glue.
