I used to have one of those campers, a '67 Shasta 13", I wish I still had it now so I could pull it behind my van Smile

    eta:
Im digging that flipped axle thing you got going there, might have to think about that a bit.

Don,just wondered, are the windows on the drivers side are same measurements as door, and rear same as like in a Sport? Also, are they mounted in a single skin unlike the double lipped recessed Sports as well?
One day I'd like to check it out for my self, have a double In & Out cheese burger, and see my kid.

Well Moe,,,,,,,if you want to talk about a box of windows,,,,,there are 9 different pieces of glass on the Chevy/Gmc vans,,,,,some the same,,,,,,,some different,,,,,,,the windshields are different,,,,,,door and vent glass the same,,,,,them triangle windows are SportVan only,,,,the panel and SportVan have different size big side windows,,,,,,the Stationary windows are all the same, whether they are in the doors or on the sides of the vans,,,,,but they are smaller than the Pop Out glass,,,,,,they fit IN the body ,,,,,,Pop Outs fit ON the body,,,,,,and the body opening for Stationary windows is 20 1/4" x 17",,,,,,,and you can just remove the Stationary glass out of the doors and screw on the Pop Out ones,,,,,,,However,,,,Pop Outs won't mount on the drivers side of a 1st Gen, but 2nd Gens and all SportVans have the right type of opening for the hinges and latch for Pop Outs to fit in place of Stationary glass......

VanGo, your van looks badass. how did you lower it, and can you maybe do a write up about the procedure?

    Don,
Could you elaborate on this a little...
I'm confused as why you say pop-out's won't fit on the driver's side of a 1st Gen. Am I missing something?

Now you are talking about the MAJOR difference between 1st Gens and the SportVans and 2nd Gens. They changed the body when they started building SportVans in 1965,,,,,,,,2nd Gens have that same body,,,,,On a 1st Gen,,,,,they just cut a hole in the body,,,,,put a piece of weatherstripping in the hole and slapped a piece of glass in there,,,,,,,BUT,,,those Pop Outs are heavy,,,,and they need reinforcement and a place to screw the hinges and latch into,,,,,,kind of like they took the door frame window openings and welded them in to ALL window openings in all SportVans and 2nd Gens. The glass sits on a ledge and below the surface of the body,,,,,,,,thats why I said, If you want Pop Outs on the drivers side of a 1st Gen, you got MAJOR work ahead of you,,,,,cuttin and weldin and paintin,,,,,But the good news is, all those Panel Vans and No Doors can still see the light, by putting in windows like mine with no problems or damage to their paint,,,,,,,,,,

    Delux68,
Lets see if i can highjack my thread back.
The front was flipped, not by me. But i would have done the same. New "pads" were welded to the bottom side of the Ibeam and reinforced. I still may have an issue with bump steer. We'll see once the motor is back in and i can run it around a little.

The back was done the same. New pads on the bottom of the axle housing and simple moved the axle on top of the springs. New shocks and Cnotching the subframe and possibly a hole in the floor are necessary for a straight flip.

I am considering "shackling it up" in the back to get a happy medium so i don't have to cut the floor. flipping the axle is a huge drop in the back with the large spring pack that mine has.

Ill have to snap some pics if i get a chance. Im never in the picture taking mood while im in the middle of a project. So writing a thread on flipping axles would be hard to illustrate.

Didn't mean to offend by calling Donivan's a sportie, guess its more of a bastardised panel van. Least it looks good....I like grapes.

New Guy...Old Box O Windows - Page 3 Empty HELP

    Post by VanGo66 Sat Dec 04, 2010 6:23 am

so, the motor went in last night. Well, almost. I need some help getting the right configuration on the parts im using. Its 66 so came factory with a 194. Its getting a 250 and a full synchro 3. The trans mount fits nice. Engine is positioned right where it should be.

    New Guy...Old Box O Windows - Page 3 12-03-10

The issue is the engine crossmember, and or, the motor mount brackets. I need to know the correct orientation of both. There is a long and short motor mount bracket. Which one goes on which side of engine, Cam/intake. Also, the crossmember. It has a rolled down edge on one side. Does that go forward or backwards.

Hope you guys can help. It'll save me some hassle.

When you put the crossmember up, the bottom of it curves towards the front,,,,,

well! no wonder. I have a different crossmember than that. I made it work. Ill post some pics. must be a v8 crossmember or somethin. Donivan, do you have any pics of your shift linkage? I've got to make the non synchro stuff work with my synchro trans.

I surely ground up a lot of gears for 400,000 miles in my Non synchro 1965 original trans,,,,,,then,,,,,,I put a 1969 synchro in it ,,,,,,HOWEVER,,,,those transmissions are not related so I had to use the 2nd Gen cross shaft and driveshaft yoke and extend the 1st and reverse shift rod to hook up the levers to that trans,,,,,,

That CM does look like mine in those pics. Not sure why it was positioned so far behind where the engine mounts are. Doesn't matter now. Its all hooked up. Workin the clutch, throttle and shift now. Then a dual master cylinder upgrade.

That van sure has been modified,,,,,,,,,,,,,so did it have an engine and trans in it when you got it? Maybe they raised the engine because the front axle hit the oil pan going over bumps,,,,,,,,

Those engine mounts look really tall, look how much clearance there is between the cross-member and the oil pan. I'm surprised the bell housing isn't hitting the floor.

The only modifications done to the van BEFORE i got it was the flipped front axle. I got it with no motor/trans, no crossmember. I got a crossmember from a 2nd gen van (Im assuming, since it was in the back of one) and the 250 is a 73, pickup i believe.

All i did was extend the crossmember motor mounts forward about 4in to meet up with the engine mounts. They are not raised any from the existing crossmember stantions. The engine and trans seem to be right where they should be in orientation to the floorboard/doghouse. I also relocated the bell crank stud off the bell housing (pictured).

Im still curious if this could be a V8 crossmember. Its doesn't "slant" toward the front like the one in Donavan's pic. Its very square. Either way it works.

Our engines sit about 1 inch over the crossmember. A 2nd Gen kinda has the engine sitting more back away from the axle,,,,,,,,
