1964 Econo width? Empty 1964 Econo width?

Post by Nick Sun Aug 22, 2010 3:19 pm

    Guy's,

I may be picking up a 64 this next weekend and I need to know the width of the van so that I can be sure it will fit on the car trailer that I will be using. If it's under 75" it should work. If anyone could confirm that I would appreciate it.

    Thanks, Nick

Can't tell you the width, but econo's only have a 90" wheelbase so the width will be much less than that

Mine isn't here for me to measure but I used a small trailer to haul mine that I borrowed from my brother-in-law... he said that an S-10 barely fit on it and after loaded I had a good 3+" on each side of my Econo.... the second Gen. S-10's are only about 68" so our Econo's are narrower than that.... It is deffinately under 75" though... good luck....

Thanks everyone. yep I was worried about the uhaul trailer. If I cant borrow someone else's that will have to do. Once the deal is done I'll post pic's and give some info. I dont want to jump the gun at this time.

    Thanks, Nick

A U-haul trailer will be fine but their standard tow dolly is too narrow. I learned that the hard way once when I rented one.

Not that it matters to this question but U-Haul must have two sizes as I sold a 96 F-250 to a fellow and he towed it with a U-Haul dolly. It fit with no problem. Just wondering.

,,,,,good answer,,,,,then it would depend on how high the trailers sides were and how much the wheel wells and bumper stuck out if that trailer was less than 75" wide,,,,,,

I have pulled many Econos with a Uhaul trailer with no problems. There is nothing to worry about if you use one. My 65 has very wide tires and fits with no problem. Don't worry about the fenders on the trailer, in fact don't worry about anything, it WILL fit.

Duane,I broke down once on my maiden voyage in northern Ohio on the way home from buying an Econo p/u. The poorly installed V8 ripped loose from the frame welds and was jumpin all over. I went and rented a U-haul dolly and was asked what it was for. I told them an Econoline and the guy said it wont fit. I said, dont worry,I tow with a dolly all the time so it will fit. He assured me it wouldnt and I assured him it would. So,I was wrong. It wasnt wide enuf. Apparently they have more than one width they rent, that's why I said their standard dolly.
Fortunately the guy gave me my money back. My buddy was with me following me in my 96 F150 so I drove home, got my own tow dolly, drove back up and brought it home. No fun at all, trust me.
