Re: 1st gen 2nd gen rear end width
I think the difference is the spring perches one is wider than the other
I think it is only about 1/4 of an inch, due to the difference of the
springs.

Re: 1st gen 2nd gen rear end width
I thought the difference was the width between the pin centering
holes in the mounting pads. one was a little smaller than the other
due to the width of the springs. not 100% sure of that.

Re: 1st gen 2nd gen rear end width
Then we are gaining on it,,,,,,,,,,even though the 1st Gen springs are 2" and the 2nd Gen springs are 3", the 2nd Gens taper down at the u bolts and the pads SEEM to be the same size and sit in the same place,,,,,,,,but lets keep checking,,,,,there still might be something that is different that requires that you cut off the perches to transfer the rear ends between both Gens, but I don't see it,,,,,,,,,yet,,,,,,,,

Re: 1st gen 2nd gen rear end width
The spring perches are farther apart on the 2nd gen axle.
I have a 2nd gen axle under my 64 Chevy van. No mods were done to it. It does push the leaf springs out in the spring hangers & the rear shackles are also on an outward angle. The axle has been under the van for 20+ years & there have been no problems.
I will be cutting off the perches & moving them to the correct location in the near future. Brad

Re: 1st gen 2nd gen rear end width
I may be goin the wrong way with this.If y'all are sayin the perches are a tad different, follow along with me...If the 1st gens are a straight 2",2nd gens taper from 3 down to 2 1/2,would the front mount/shackle be a tad different/offset as far as where it sits 'in' toward center of body due to 1" wider? If so,that would throw off perch at axle if that centerline was different.I've never measured inside wall to spring center mount.
Pic is of a 2nd Gen. @ 3" width.

spring hangars =??
Hi 2 all- just a thought as Im always trying to do things labor & cost effective-im just cheap!! what about just cutting the spring hanger holes larger to accomidate the width old gen2 springs?? Then if needed=?? put a 1/4 " plate -with same hole drilled in it between the hanger & springs whatever width you determine to distribute the weight/ mounting of the spring??-if needed at all?? just thinking? Cutting the perches sometimes will get you some weakened / holes in the axle housing. Then weve got to weld that up and just more work and also when mounting the springs again to the housing - make sure to get the hangers really tightened down and re-check after some use.Ive seen the u-bolts wear in the housing areas due to tightness many tinmes before -just my 2c's worth.
