    1ST Gen WindShield gasket

Post by Vanish on Fri Jun 25, 2010 10:41 pm

We are trying to put some glass up front of the No Door ... I went and got a gasket for a 64-66 Chevy truck Just like Just about every one else has .... and it Looks like it's going to have to be cut to make it work ... Just wondering if any one here has been up against this before ??? Some have said that it fits without having to cut the gasket ??? and some have had to cut it ??? if you have used this gasket before did you have to cut yours ??? or did you use something else ?? Thanks .......

I used the 65 pick up truck gasket on my 65 van. It was an aftermarket part number, I can't remember now.

It did seem to fit onto the glass a little sloppy, But once installed into the frame in settled in under compression and as the next few days passed it all settled right in nice.

That picture looks like it could be the same as my gasket but I didn't try it on the fram first.
Try putting it on the glass and see what thats like.

It looks like you have about an axtra inch or more but I think you could spread that around the frame evenly under compresion and it should fit. I wouldn't cut that.

My windshield was installed with the rubber on the glass and sat in at the bottom. then pulled in up both sides and across the top using a string and well soaped up rubber. Some time after that it settled in; then that black butal rubber caulking was put into the rubber from both the glass and metal sides. to seal it, messy but has to be done. Some install the rubber and windshield with the cualking all at once but I think that would be real messy, and it might glue down defor it settles into place.

you can see here how loose it fit the glass. Look at the left side. It seemed to be too big but once pushed into the frame the rubber compressed and spread the extra around evenly and it fit nice.

Thats glass guy who said it will shrink a bit once the sun is on it, if it has a split, that will open up.

Put the bonded joiont at the bottom center.

    Just what M1D said.
I installed gaskets in the `65 GMC & `66 Chevy without cutting.
    Take your time.
Move the gasket around the glass so that the "extra" is even.
Soap & rope works the best.
    Don't forget the 3M bedding compound !
Lay the gasket in the sun to make it flexible.

I used GM # 3794940 which in the 1958-65 GM truck book shows :
1964-65 all exc cowls, g-10-g910, P models exc deluxe equip (no molding)
    group 16.040

Don't know what to tell you.
Had no problems with the gasket or install.

There wasn't that much extra gasket on mine ...

Im wondering if you are running into the same thing I did ,, the windshield you are replacing may have been cut to small in the first place if its not original., I had some numbers written down somewhere , but 59 and 1/4 inches diagonal comes to mind for original glass ?? maybe ...

    That does look too long.

Mine was an aftermarket gasket. Started with W in the part number but I don't think it was the number you have. As I recal there is another very simular part number from the same suplyer for the 2nd gen gasket.

Your gasket is so long I now think you might have the 2nd gen one.

There is a proper bonding agent to re seam it if you are going to cut it down.

I will look for the paper work on the gasket I used and repost in a minute.

    found it "corrected numbers below"

I used the WBL653 gasket which is for the 64-66 PU.

The WBL693 is the one that fits the 2nd gen van and many glass shops and parts dealers try to say that 64 to 70 Chevy is all the same windshield. Thier parts books are clearly wrong. Some supliers use WCR653 for thier 2nd gen WS gasket!! look at those numbers, it would be very easy for them to mistakenly send you the wrong one.

I think if you google that number you will find the suplier. Its not expensive as I recall it was $43 CND shipping and all. I think that means its a $27 gasket to you guys.
