Depends on how bad it is? Any pics? Missing alot probably weld in patches. If your looking at pinholes and such and you don't want to open it up, clean it up hit with some spray can rust converter and maybe use that stuff to fill them in and put some primer and paint on it to seal it. Big thing is "trying" to stop or get rid of what rust is there and getting things sealed up to keep water from hurting it any further. No guarantees but would by some time. Dura glass would also work as a filler if you can keep the water from getting back in, again prime and paint to seal it.

Ya , could be worse. I think it's a candidate for some patching tho. That's quite a long stretch and I suppose could separate on you. See how the Body work gurus chime in.

It definitely needs patching, how much can be determined by poking all the way along there with an ice pick, or scratch awl. Anywhere it goes through, needs new metal welded in. That is the test I always use anyway.

After you get it all patched don't forget to drill about 3 holes and seal them with paint right in the bottom of the crevice. This will give water a chance to seep out. You might notice a drip stain on the inside but it won't be much water--just enough to keep the new metal from rusting out like the old. Good luck.
