Re: 1966 g van has a new home
Ordered a cooling components electric fan yesterday along with the 70amp relay and cylinder head temp probe. One step closer to getting it ready for the new motor, trying to get all pieces in place before I plung into the motor swap, I figure I can get the small things done In a day or so and still keep driving it until I am ready to install the motor..

She is at different FOB's she just moved north for 2 weeks , then heading back south...for some reason she won't tell me exactly where she is...she does keep in contact via text or email when she has connection...she started off with a 90 day deploy then it went to 180 now they recut her orders for 362 days! She is a nurse practioner sent with a unit out of Washington state...she is actually tied with Fort Benning here in Columbus Ga...

Re: 1966 g van has a new home
I was wondering how you did your manual override switch? I have one wired up also, but it still relies on the relay to be functioning right. I ran into a situation this summer where if I had something that by-passed the systems circuit breaker and relay , it would have been handy.

Re: 1966 g van has a new home
Digz I tapped into the black wire that runs to the sending unit..if your sending unit is like mine it has a black wire coming from the relay and a black wire going to ground, when the temps reach a specified amount the sending unit closes and completes the circuit...i tapped into the black line coming from the relay and added a toggle switch, one leg from the relay and one to ground.

Re: 1966 g van has a new home
Okay,, Yes that is what I have set up myself. I'm kicking around putting another relay that by passes the whole temp sensor and fan control and directly powers the fan just for a backup system, but I dont know if I could accidently fry the other stuff if I did that? probably just trying to overkill a problem that may never happen again ,,LOL
Thanks

Re: 1966 g van has a new home
You could by pass the relay with a toggle switch....tap the red wire before the relay into one leg of a toggle and tap the other leg of the toggle to orange, it will still be protected by the 60 amp fuse...the relay is is protected by the 60amp fuse as well, so you will have done nothing but override all systems at your will..you would also be able to have the fan run without the ignition on ! Would help on those really hot days when you want to cool down the doghouse !

Re: 1966 g van has a new home
After installing the radiator fan i thought it would be a good idea to install a new thermostat...ordered a high flow with the bypass holes...ok so easy install...well not exactly....I discovered the mechanical temp probe installed previous to me owning the van was to long and bumped the thermostat bottom...creating a constant flow..it was just long enough to hit the thermostat base and push it away from the flange..made a trip to lowes for some brass fittings and all is good..first picture is how far the probe was in the water neck housing...i probably would have done the same thing not thinking that the probe would contact the thermostat....

Re: 1966 g van has a new home
Had an issue with the charging system so thought i would do some tinkering in the doghouse...found some really ugly wiring, all covered with HIDE-IT-ALL black electrical tape...spent most the day wire by wire replacing the ugly..this is just some of what I discovered. Hopefully will complete the doghouse wiring tomorrow and maybe head into the dreaded dash area...body just don't bend like it use to since the surgery...
