Need help with Econoline lights Empty Need help with Econoline lights

Post by Donn Mon Oct 05, 2009 2:12 pm

Both my brake lights and reverse lights do not work. Rear lights do work when turned on.
I need to know where the brake light switch is, I assume it is on frame? cannot see it with the belly pan on.
The reverse lights, should they be connected to the trans or trans linkage / switch somewhere?
Could really use a complete wiring diagram for the entire truck as it was butchered by someone along the way.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

If the fuses are good,,,,,,and they might be on the back of the head light switch,,,,,then the back up light switch is probably mounted on the transmission, hooked to the reverse lever,,,,,,the brake light switch might be screwed into the master cylinder or really close to it. Then the brake light switch sends a signal to the turn signal switch and it turns on the rear bulbs. And if you got a hazard light switch, it can over ride the brake and turn signals , especially if it is on,,,,and its fuse or flasher are burned out......so that my guesses for a FORD,,,,,,,,,

Reverse switch should be like a push-button under the steering column brace.

Got the reverse light's working, they lost a ground to rust, sanded and replaced the ground. They are good to go.

Brake light's- found the switch, which is mounted in front of the master. It has two ends that were rusted, sanded them and replaced the wire ends, still no lights. Not sure if this switch is made to come off? anyone real familiar with it? The wires run across the van to the passenger side and look to go into a relay switch. I don't think the switch is bad because I do have rear lights, rear emergency lights flash and rear directionals work.
Any diagnoses or ideas where to look next would be appreciated, I think I am running out of ideas...
    Thanks

You need to use a voltmeter or test light and see if one of the wires on the brake light switch has voltage,,,,,then hook both those wires together and see if the brake lights come on,,,,,,

    donivan,
Followed your advise, put the wires together and as you said the lights went on! I took the switch off. I checked out what is supposed to be the correct switch on line, but it is not even close to the one that was on there?
Ordered the switch, autolite c60b-13480-a, hopefully I am gaining on it.
Thanks to all for your help! I'll update when the new switch arrives..

If things don't turn out looking exactly the same, I would say as long as you get a switch to screw in and not leak, then you can just change the wire terminals to whatever will fit the switch,,,,, Do you know what size threads are on your switch??? maybe 1/8" MPT ???

    donivan,
The two switches are compleatly different. The one that came off the van attach's with a bolt through the switch. Where the one listed and the one I bought before taking the switch off attach's with threads on the end.
The one that came off is in-cased with a rummber covering that does say Fomoco and the switch is from autolite. So I am guessing that it is original.
I am sure someone here would know way better then me, but I guess unless you have had to change one there probably not to many people familiar with it.
I went to Mac and they don't list either, so the its kind of a mystery..

Ford sure likes to do things the hard way,,,,,,so you got one of those banjo bolt brake light switches,,,,if they charge you like its made of gold, you could add a switch into the brake line with a fitting and use the screw in switch,,,,,or,,,,,use a nice simple Chevy one,,,,,,the arm rests on the brake pedal and when you step on the brake pedal, the arm drops down and puts the brake lights on,,,,,
