Today there was a car show, driver reunion and hall of fame induction at the old Augusta International Speedway. The speedway has been closed for years, but a group is trying to preserve most of it's history. The small private school I went to in the 70's purchased at least some of the grandstands for the football stadium when the track closed.
Today I met and got an autograph and photos from Rex White the 1960 NASCAR Champion.
Way back in the sixties Fireball Roberts was my favorite driver. (as much as a 6 year could have a favorite driver) The best of show car at today's show got a trophy that was a reproduction of the one Robert's received at Augusta when he won his last NASCAR race. Man that was one awesome trophy!
To put the cherry on the top of the day, my van got an award as being one of the top 22 cars! I was blown away to say the least. The van got a great deal of attention, so many people commenting and remembering a van in their past. I love talking about the van with the people that stop by. One old timer that stopped and talked was from my home town and remembered the van when it was serving it's time as an appliance repairman's truck when Georgia Power Company sold and serviced home appliances.
Just a great great day for an old bald guy!
