    Safari windows Empty Safari windows

Post by gravesj Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:05 pm

Had a thought and was wondering what you guys think.
Making my front windows into Safari Windows???
Solid metal post in the middle...
Piano hinge on the glass frame...
The whole glass wrapped in a metal U channel...

You see where I am going with this.
    Thanks for the input!

I like the idea... always thought it was a cool VW bus feature! I second the "go for it" motion!

I had the same idea for the back window popout using 2 stock pop out frames welded together. Its simple enuf to do using the stock latches and frame to appear factory. The only hard part is the seal. A100 windsihields are big so the same idea could be applied using the latches but that would be a lot of pieceing together of the frames so I would look for alternative longer channels. No idea where to get em either.
This could be done on 64-66 Chevy vans also since they've got the flat glass windshields.

Since the A's panels are on different planes, you'd probably have to go with separate panels instead of welding them together.

I was thinking the frameless hardware the latter As had might be a starting point. If so, you might want to consider upgrading to 3/8" laminated in lieu of 1/4".

There was a discussion about this on the Yahoo site. George said to lay a bead of sealant down, then set the glass into it using some wax paper between the glass and sealant so that the glass will release the following day.

Hard to believe, but I may actually use that advice in my line of work someday.

    Yeah all good ideas.
I was thinking weld in a channel in the middle from a donor vehicle and have the glass shop sell me the glass with the channel around it.
Then piano type hinge at the top and locking house window type latches at the bottom. Also the metal slider bar in the middle of each pane
of glass to lock it open etc. Will see just a thought. Could take me years to actually do it. Since I have 2 boys 4.5 and 2.5 and a beautiful understanding wife...

I didnt mean weld together to make one big popout for both sides,I meant weld the smaller side window pop out frames together to fit one section of each side of the windshield but the framesless option is even better. To do with frames though it would take at least 4 pop outs to do both sides.

Tim, I'm sure someone will get it done one way or another. After seeing Lamborghini scissor style front doors on a 3rd generation Chevy, a safari windshield system seems entirely doable.

As and old VW guy, Safari windows in my flattie chevy van would be the bomb. Am thinking, because tempered glass can be drilled and cut with the right tools (would probably have a shop do it as they cover breakage) that I would get thicker glass, hinge it at the top and drill a hole or two up top for wipers. Could even use one wiper or a set up from old jeeps. Either way, a Safari window up front would be better than A/C. And, this would require no modifications and give my current wipers a break.

Please tell us how it works out, thanks for posting.
