i keep seeing 4 deg btdc as the spec for the 144 with the manual transmission. the automatic transmission is called out at 10 deg. is that the information others have? 4 deg seems weird. but i set it there anyway. any thoughts?

Re: timing on the 144
My Chiltons is showing 6BTDC in 61 and 62, 4BTDC in 63 and 64. Seems it was never offered in AT config. 170s in 64 and 65 added 4deg advance when mated to AT.
I would go with (if yours is a 63) 8BTDC, and get a feel for what is best. Also be aware that using a timing light method is not always accurate with these old engines, as the crank pulleys have issues where the timing mark will rotate around the hub off of TDC. You may have to verify TDC first with the plug out of cyl 1 and marking your crank pulley with white chalk. If your mark is accurate, you're good to go... mine was way off, and I had to buy a new pulley.
