This is a quote form Grundy "collector" insurance.
" Thank you for submitting your information to Grundy Worldwide’s underwriting department. Unfortunately, we are unable to insure this vehicle because it does not have any significant collector status and will not qualify for our program. This program is designed for collector and antique vehicles used and maintained for those purposes. We wish you the best in finding the appropriate coverage for this vehicle."

JC Taylor also does not insure vans.

I say don't use them for ANY of your insurance needs!! They don't deserve us......

That doesn't sound encouraging. I was hoping to go that route,it even was one of the reasons I gave my wife why buying an early was the smart thing to do.

    Hey Guys,

I've been on lurker status for a good while now, (going thru a divorce, so I've been preoccupied) but I wanted to mention my insurance coverage.

I use American National Insurance "C.H.R.O.M.E." coverage. That stands for classic, hot rod, original, modified, exotic. I got the coverage when I had my 29 Model A, and used it on a corvette and now my van. The insurance will be slightly higher than Grundy, etc. but you are allowed 7,500 miles a year and are not as limited on proper usage of the vehicle. The only catches are you have to insure at least one daily driver with their regular insurance, and have to park the vehicle in a locked garage when not in use. (they checked and photographed my van in my garage).

$8,000 stated value with full coverage on my van was about $50 a year more than liability only would have cost for use as a daily driver.

    Hope this helps

I went with ( American Collectors Insurance Agency )
They were GREAT! extremely help full and the girl I spoke with to confirm they got my pictures actually liked my van ! I went with the highest option values and put my van at $4G. In NY we have to get some extra coverage, all told I will pay $136.15 per year !
    I strongly reccomend this company..

Why should we support JC Taylor and the Grundy's of the world when they
look down at us with quotes like this "we will not consider this vehicle because it does not have any significant collector status "

I wonder if AMC's and Duster's were considered "significant" 10 years ago?

Did they say it needed to be in a locked garage & did you have to prove it was?

I know of at least one other vanner who insures his Econo with Grundy with no problems. You might review what you sent them in your request?

    Later,

No need to, they straight out said "Thank you for submitting your information to Grundy Worldwide’s underwriting department. Unfortunately, we are unable to insure this vehicle because it does not have any significant collector status and will not qualify for our program. Does not get any clearer then that.
If someone told you they have Grundy insurance for a van, I would find it hard to believe after the above quote...

I myself tried going with Grundy in 2005. I wanted to insure my '69 108 and they told me they don't touch custom vans period. I had full coverage insurance from Farmer's shortly after and they cancelled my policy after 3 days and told me my van couldn't be insured by them. I am going to be looking for insurance in the future and these posts are helpful. Thanks everyone for sharing your info about this topic.

My policy with SAFECO is almost up & they said they can no longer insure my van!
    hmmm.....................................
They also said they no longer insure anything not 100% restored and this was why they are dropping my van & Spitfire.

This IS their reason on the van...........not that it is a van.

They say a primer paint job disqualifies it! LOL

Paint it and they will pick it back up!

    Geeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

The PRICKS! ( after years of insuring primered cars for me too!)

    Anyway.......

American Collectors says they will & GUESS WHAT???????

    So will State Farm!!!

Or at least State Farm says they will. They do "agreed value" classic insurance.

I'm now looking into State Farm as they have a local agent and good rep.

My current SAFECO policy expires in 3 weeks.

More later on what I get.
    Smile

PS-------> ADD SAFECO to the BOYCOTT LIST!

I think vans are in a category all of their own... you can do anything to a van and it's acceptable in the van world but throw 4x4 axles under a mustang and it's no longer a collectible vehicle except for parts. To put a price or value on a car that remains pretty much stock or original would be pretty easy but how can they estimate the value of the vanning passion that van owners have. I wonder how the estimate the value of some of these ratrods that are just thrown together?

Is Grundy the one that advertises on 'My Classic Car'? If so I got a quote just 2 months ago on my 64 econo (in what looks like primer but is actually a finished color). They asked if it was garaged, and what my other two daily drivers were for the wife and I, but once I answered those they quoted me $190 for a $5,000 stated value.

I almost went with them, but they said it couldn't be used for business and since I plan on using this van partly to advertise my band I figured I'd leave it on my regular policy, at least for now.

Sorry, I can't remember if it was indeed Grundy, but I did call whoever it was in response to the ad on MCC.

Ive heard these stories before but I know poeple who have early vans and pickups with Haggerty and Grundy. I talked to both companies at Carlisle and they both assured me that they will insure the earlies, that people over the phone were wrong. This was 2 years ago. Try asking them at a show for better results.
