It Looks like I may need to send out my Gear box for a Rebuild. It's not leaking. But on the Lift today I notice a Scary amount of Shaft looseness at the Gear arm. This was turning to the "extreme" in one direction only. I first thought the arm was slipping on the shaft. So who has had a gear rebuilt ? Price range and Best Vendor: "Lares ? steer n gear ? Thanks

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
Badbadger had his re-done in some shop and he was fine with it. I'd think he'll pick up on this thread.

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
it may just need adjusted. I had mine rebuilt by steer and gear and was almost $400.00 but mine was worn past adjusting. don't know if dodge would be same cost as chevy. be aware that some rebuilds are simply replacing seals, bushings and adjusting properly.

Steering Gear Rebuild
Go on line and google Blue Top Steering. In North Dakota. I had mine redone there it worked out very well for me. But the worm gears are no longer available so if it is shot then you need to find a donor box. My bill was under 200.00 not inluding the shipping.

As a matter of Fact I sent it to them this week for an Eval. Ryan appears to be a great guy and knows his stuff.

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
I've got a similar problem with worn steering but unlikely to find a supplier/repairer this side of the Atlantic. An update of what gets done to yours to improve it would be appreciated. Will be pulling mine apart over winter...

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
Jaydub, maybe I have one. Got a replacement from Badbadger but will not let go until I have my original one checked, will definitely keep the better one, but the other might help you then - it's in Germany right now, but that's just a short trip.
You should stop by the Mopar Nats in Herten, Germany next year (most likely 1st August weekend) anyway. We'll do an A100 meet & greet there: Corey cruiser A100, at least one van and my pickup should be there - and your's, of course

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
69 - Would love to take a trip over your way. Not been on any foreign trips for a good few years... used to enjoy continental travel on my bikes (Harleys and old chops) but got a bit beat up for long rides so thought I'd drive my hot rod. Hot rod blew the engine and spent the last couple of years in bits going nowhere hence me selling it and buying the Dodge. Hoping to start going places again...
May well be interested in your steering box if you decide to sell it on - I was hoping mine would be a matter of adjustment but it's a bit further gone than that!

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
I sent my steering box in a couple of weeks ago to Blue Top Steering for a rebuild. It is on it's way back to me so I don't know for sure how it will perform, but Ryan has assured me that it is even better that new.
The better news is that the worm gear in mine had a different part number than he had seen before. He was able to cross reference the part number and was able to find a supplier for a new worm gear.
So if your worm gear is bad there is hope, give Ryan at Blue Top a call (701) 301-1256.

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
Thanks for bothering to update... hope yours is as good as expected, "better than new" - what more could you want. Gotta make a difference to driving enjoyment. Not got anywhere with mine yet, winter proved to be cold and wet and snowy and not conducive to playing with steering boxes... give me a few weeks...

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
yes, thanks for the updates all, I've noticed a "skip" in my steering that happens very rarely, feels like it "missed a tooth" or something during a turn. I'm going to give it a good inspection but I haven't been able to replicate it at will.

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
I managaed to buy a freshly rebuilt steering gearbox and shaft complete from Steer-n-Gear back in 2009, and it still drives great. Don't know if they still offer newly rebuilt units now....may need a core to be sent in for rebuilding. Cost me a few bucks more, but worth it as my bearing surfaces had worn too far to get any resurfacing build up to stick.
I asked a question on a completed auction for a slightly different gearbox....only way to get their details at that time.

Re: STEERING GEAR REBUILD
BTW... I got my box back, turning it by hand and it feels silky smooth.
I will not have the van on the road for probably a year or more so I can't say how it performs on the road.
