Re: 65 Rear differential
you will have to get a posi carier for it. Look at summit and google for companies that provide.
I am pretty sure thats the ealr 10 bolt meaning pre 71.(not sure exactly where the cut off year is)
there are three different cariers depending which gear ratio you use
So the first thing is to decide what gear ratio you will be using.

Re: 65 Rear differential
It is the stock 10 bolt 3.36 gears. I'd like to keep the same gear ratio if possible.

Re: 65 Rear differential
I know the Pros of having Posi, but what about Cons?
If I road-trip and have Posi is there anything I have to be more careful with, like driving in the rain? And the pressure on the axle, like if I make a bunch of right turns, does the pressure just build on the inside or outside axle?

Re: 65 Rear differential
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64-72-GM-CAR-W-10BL-8-2-28SPL-AUBURN-POSI-3-36-GEARS-MASTER-KIT-PACKAGE-/272537038414?hash=item3f74792e4e:g:-ZYAAOSwjDZYi853&vxp=mtr did a quick search so shop around, but it is available. posi isn't true posi, it is limited slip on most original and aftermarket units so the cons are minimized. it is an 8.2 10 bolt, not the popular 8.5 so not sure if anything from that will fit. not 100% positive on it being the car/28 spline. the bop is different than the chevy but not sure how it differs, maybe others can chime in on specifics.

Re: 65 Rear differential
Agree with Scott. Posi in a 8.2 inch 10 bolt is kind of useless...and can be more trouble than non. I kinda like 1 tire fire.....until the spider gears explode.
Look for slack in the carrier stud that holds one set of spider gears in place. if it is tight, I would DO NOTHING. Just my 50 plus old opinion.
I have a stout 327 in my 65G with slicks on back., 375 horse cam. I just exploded the carrier and spider gears. a posi would not have helped.
Putting a stock carrier back in it and drive a little slower. If I want to beat on it..it needs a 8 or 9 inch Ford.
You will need outside seals, front seal, bearing and crush nut. Have a rear end guy install and set up rear gear. original 3;36 are pretty good .Pretty simple if you use the same ring and pinion.

Re: 65 Rear differential
Since the whole rear end is already torn apart and powder coated I've already decided to go with the posi in the long run, I've read that some guys are happy they did it and a few that say is not probably not worth it. but hey what the hell, its all for fun. thanks for all your input and advice guys!
Ill be going to keep the stock gear ratio and axles as well. Any one know of a good bearing and seal kit?

Re: 65 Rear differential
I got a posi kit from National Drivetrain for my 68 10 bolt 8.2 rear diff with the stock 3.36 gears. Just call them and give them the number on your axle tube and they should have a kit for you. I paid a little over $600 for mine. Axles, axle bearings, and seals not included in kit. I haven't driven my van so I can't tell you if it's any good or not. I'll let everybody know how it goes when I take it for a ride.
