Suspension parts sources? Empty Suspension parts sources?

Post by bkaspr Sun Apr 09, 2017 12:51 pm

    Hello all,

I need a variety of parts for the suspension on my 65 a100. I was wondering if anyone had a good source for new parts (prefer not to go the used route). Also wanted to see if there were any other Mopar trucks/cars from the same time period that used the same parts. Hopefully, one that is just more readily available and easy to find on ebay and the like.

In particular this is what we're going to have to replace:

    Steering linkage
    Tie rod ends
king pins (I think I found a comparable MOOG product for these)
    Sway bar bushings
    Sway bar end links

You know, pretty much EVERYTHING. Any leads or help is greatly appreciated.

Rockauto is a good source. King Pins (Moog and others), Sway bar bushings and lots of other things are available. springs'n'things is a good source for the bushings at the end of the leaf springs. It was a very nice and helpful contact.

Swaybar end links -> found a very helpful hint in this forum, that the links for the Ford F-150 (certain years) do fit. And they do fit (although they are a little shorter -> I don't care Smile ).

Tie rod ends are only available for one side (left/right hand thread)... Don't know, why the other end is not available anymore....

If you find a solution for that, please let us know.

Draglink -> I was lucky to get one from donivan (used), "new" ones have so-so/mixed reviews. Don't remember.
Crosslink -> I have no idea...

Thanks for the info @69. Do you know what year(s) f-150 sway end links fit? I can't seem to locate that info here on the forum.

I have a follow up question for anyone else. Does anyone know the original part numbers for the tie rod ends? I may have found a set, but want to be double sure that they'll fit.

    I ordered this one @Rockauto: MOOG K8662

PartNo for the tie rod ends are
right hand thread 2240673 (same as in a "forward control 200 300")
left hand thread 2525096 (no match in trucks)
I also did not find the tie rod ends in the '69 passenger car parts book.

HMMM, the pair I found are numbered 2240673 and 2240672. One left and one right (apparently). Does this sound right?

Posted this back in Dec 2013:

    https://vintage-vans.forumotion.com/t35560p105-new-guy-a108

Spent some time chatting with Moog technical department since there is a considerable number of part numbers tossed around on the web with yes and no's as to fitting for tie rods.

From an early 1980's Moog Steering & Suspension Catalog

    Right Side - ES288R 11/16-18 RHT

    Left Side - ES342L 11/16-18 LHT

Beyond that the most critical measurement is for the stud taper, both right and left rods have the same, makes that easy:

    Small End .543"

    Large End .627

    Length of Taper .672

This works out to 1.5" of taper per foot, which is also 7*, which seems to be a popular taper in that Ford & GM also use that taper but not with the same small/ large and length of taper.

Scanning the current specs for available tie rods from Moog there are none that have the same Small/Large or length of taper. Did not find the specs for the ES140R to verify if it was truly a match or just one that seems to work.

If anybody has the specs for that tie rod I would be interested in getting them.

I was able to obtain new 288R & 342L tie rods off ebay. You can also get a 288L which has the same taper spec as the 288R which is a match top the 342L, you do have to use a short castle nut which are easy to get.

Napa crosses the 288R to NCP2692078, the 288L to NCP2692079

Any tie rod with the right dimension, taper and length of taper can be used as long as the threaded part for the castle nut is long enough, if it is too long just use a washer.

There is also a 142L, if it has the same taper as the R version then it to will work, unfortunately not found specs for the 142 rods to date

There are two ES342L tie rods for sale on ebay right now, one for $160.57 the other $165.00, both with free shipping. Obviously the sellers are banking on the rarity of the parts, but there are alternatives, plus they are not that rare, my ES342L only cost me $30 with shipping off ebay.

Thank you for all the info. This is all extremely helpful! I'm sure some other questions will pop up, but this gives me a somewhere to start. If anyone else has info out there on any of the linkage parts I would appreciate it.

I've fitted one of these JEEP CJ/MB/GPW 1941-86, TIE ROD END LHT

PART NO. 8136674. Perfect match to old one. Right hand thread also available. I think the make is Crown automotive

    Excellent information.

Yes that is a Crown part number, here is the right hand side part number, 8136600, both of these for under $11 each, that makes the Moog unobtainium not really worth $160, even the $30 I paid seems high now.

Pulled info from Morris 4X4 Center, they also have tie rod boots 645134 for under $2

As far as I researched, the Crown parts match the Moog 140L and 62R. Just ordered those @rockauto, as one of my wheel cylinders just gave up... Will report back, when installed.

I have to correct myself. I ordered ES140R and ES62L

For now I can confirm, that the 140R fits snug on the passenger side (right hand thread), including the included castle nut. It was easier to pull the tie rod end while the arm was removed from knuckle (just 2 screws, although big Smile ).

I will report on the left hand thread when done on the driver side.

Success also on the driver side. ES62L fits as snug as it should. But - connecting rod is bend way too much....
