I want to put a rear view mirror head with a day / night function on the stock mounting bracket. Has anyone done this, if so what mirror did you use?

FYI...I used a 1956 Chevrolet rear view mirror with a day / night flip switch. It looks great, is not quite as wide as the stock mirror, but is a lot nicer looking and has the same size mounting bolt.

I used this shorter base to move the mirror higher on my van to prevent a blind spot on my windshield. http://www.classicindustries.com/product/truck/parts/cx1056.html

Thanks GMman...
Did you use a "adapter" from a 57 chevy mirror to be able to mount it to the mirror's bracket? The adapter I refer to is the one that takes it from the "y" mounting and adapts it to screw threads.
