mechanical pump fuel pressure Empty mechanical pump fuel pressure

curious as to how a mechanical pump regulates pressure. started working on the 1970 sportsman 318/727, it came with a reman carb, pretty clean, had it running and idling nicely ealier this year, cleaned tank, new lines and filter...its overwhelming the needle seat now and pushing fuel out the vents..wondering before i pull the carb if this could be a pump issue..pulled needle and seat and all seems good..

It's usually hard to get the mechanical pump to pump too much (as it is lever operate once every engine revolution), but: if the float inside the carb is "leaking", it'll soak with fuel, sink and open the needle. That's when fuel is poured through every single hole of the carb. Even places you can't imagine.

Check you float (I had it once on a 2bbl Carter).
