Straight six fuel pressure Empty Straight six fuel pressure

    Post by No1rascal Sun Aug 21, 2016 9:11 pm

Does anyone know what the stock fuel pressure is on a straight six? Recently acquired a 65 that a PO had installed an electric pump. It has a fuel pressure gauge installed that shows between 9-10 lbs, that seems high to me.

    Any info is appreciated.

    Thanks

Yes, 2-4 lbs. and not continuous is all a six should have.  A good test of the stock mechanical pump is to pull the fuel line from the carb and insert it into a small plastic water bottle.  Crank the engine over and it should slowly fill the bottle in spurts in about 3-5 seconds, any faster its too high.  The stock pump is not continuous, only spurts a small amount of gas every time the cam comes around and pushes the lever like an old fashioned water pump.  You don't need a continuous stream like from an electric pump, you will only force fuel past the float valve.  Or as Doni said, use a regulator but a good one that goes low range is expensive, most start at 4 lbs.  Go with a new ethanol proof stock pump, sold everywhere, all you need.

Thanks guys, thats what I thought.  PO had installed a new mechanical pump but never switched back to it, so I will just go back to that.
