Adding a brake servo to drums Empty Adding a brake servo to drums

Post by jifop Sun Jul 24, 2016 9:44 am

Hey guys, eventually I'm Going to change over to front discs on my Econoline but I was wandering can I add a dual circuit servo assist master cylinder and pedal assembly to the stock drums?

Will it damage them and will it improve the braking?

I'm thinking it could be a good interim until I get the discs sorted.

    Thanks all

the 1967 vans came with a dual line master cylinder,,,,,,,,one line to the front brakes, and one to the rear,,,,,for safety reasons,,,,,,,,,once the vehicles got hoods, there was room to install a vacuum booster to make the pedal easier to push,,,,,,,a dual line master cylinder is the way to go,,,,,as well as replacing the old rubber and metal brake lines,,,,,,,

I have a servo boost dual circuit cylinder (non Econoline) which I can for I just wanted to check that it was ok to use it with the drums!

Yes it's OK, but the booster will block the shift rods if the setup is located in the oem position. You'd have to use one of those side ways setups in the cab. I installed one on mine, a CPP unit, but I'm converting to cable shift AOD.

You'll also need residual valves on the lines b/c the M/C is mounted so low if they aren't already part of the M/C. 10# for drums, 2# for discs and an adjustable proportioning valve for the rear if you are going with discs up front.

Watch out for clearance issues with the sway bar and the E brake. As you can see I have some issues with the ebrake mounting bracket I need to resolve. And if/when I get a sway bar I'll need to moove the prop valve. I used an 8" single, a 7" dual may or may not fit better. An 8 dual is a no go on both sway bar and ebrake.

Wowsers that is tight, I believe it's a 7" dual and is technically for a 50s/60s Chevy truck but beggars can't be choosers.

It should be with me tomorrow so I should have a better idea if the size.

Is that the original pedal you've used?

Hey Seth, so mine turned up today and it's pretty much the same as yours but with a different front bracket.

I'll buy some residual valves and fit a proportioning one once I convert to disks.

The master cylinder will just clear the sway bar and sit above it however I've no idea how I'll sort the ebrake and I need that for the MOT, hmm

I'm going to make a new bracket for mine. I'd like to here what you come up with for it.

FYI:  I have a '65 with a 7"  booster / prop. valve / pedal and only drum brakes. Works very well.
Have to monkey with the floor opening for checking and filling of reservoir.

Sorry, no good photo's (belly pan installed)....appears same as previous poster. For reference, check the units on the 'Speedway' site. I just have the drum brakes, and they work just fine.
