235/70/15 on the front of A's ?? Empty 235/70/15 on the front of A's ??

Post by rustytoolss Mon Feb 01, 2016 3:03 pm

Anybody running 235/70/15 (28" DIA) on the front of their A's?  My factory service manual shows 8.15-15 as an optional tire size . Which equals close to 235/70/15.

The factory optional 8.15-15 was (27.72" DIA)

I did read some post of guys running 225/70/15 (27.4" DIA) .
    And a few using 235/75/15 (28.9" DIA)

I stuffed some 215/70/15's (26.9" DIA) on it. But they look somewhat small/lost on the rear.

I'm trying to run the same size tires on all 4 corners.

I have 265/50/15 on the front and 295/50/15 on the rear. Not sure what the wheel widths are, the prior owner put them on.

Your fronts are aprox 25.5" DIA. I'm looking to see if a 28" DIA front tire will fit without problems.

Come on guys, I'm sure that someone has stuffed some 235/70/15 under the front of their A100. What about the guys with those Camper vans, or the type of A100 with the camper/trailer body units.

I had 225/75x15's on the front of my A108.
Just cleared the edge of the arches when turning.
    Steering was soooooooo heavy.
    Swapped to 195/70x15's last summer.
    Steering STILL soooooooo heavy.

I spent the day measuring clearances up front. Since I've added disc brakes. This pushes the wheel .200" farther to the outside of the vehicle. Also my wheels (15x7) , have a backspacing of 3.5".
So my tire and wheel combination is pushed .700" to the outside. I'm thinking that a 235/70/15 will "ALMOST " stick out passed the edge of the body. Sure don't want that. So I leaning more toward 225/70/15 or 215/70/15.
Along with what was said about a 28" tire might catch the lower edge of the front fender, on turns .
225/70/15 or 215/70/15 are probably smarter choices, in the long run.

I'm sure that there are many wheels, with better backspacing. But I'm not in the position to buy wheels. My current wheels are Weld ProStars 15x7 with 3.5" backspacing. I wish that my wheels did have 4"-4.5" back spacing.

Why not use the power steering system from early Mustangs? It could be made to fit the A. Requires fabrication but would work.

Do you have any pictures , or information about installing a mustang power steering system. Dodge had a system back in the day (was a complicated mess). The only other system I've heard of was a 79-84 Toyota 4x4 truck unit.

No pics nor information. Only a clear vision in my head since I did a restoration of a '66 Fastback for a customer and completely rebuilt the power steering unit, pump and hoses.

Go somewhere to take a look underneath a car. Like I said, requires fabrication but is doable. Other Fords have the same thing, some of them.

Rusty, a 205/80 R15 would be roughly the equivalent of an 8.15-15 @ 8.1" section width and 27.9" tall. The 235/70 R15 is around 1.2" wider. I think as you get taller the width may be a little more critical for front fender and possibly drag link clearances when turning. Why not find a used tire and slap in on a spare rim and check it out?

I think in the long run that I will be going to a 225/70/15 . They are about 27.4" tall, which are very close to the stock 6.95-15's . The section width on the 225 is wider. I would rather use a smaller Diameter tire, than have clearance issues.

Rusty I'm running a 235/60/15 on all 4 corners. I'm not sure what the "70" difference would make

    your 235/60/15=26.1" dia
    a 235/70/15=28.0" dia
I bought a set of (4) 225/70/15=27.4" dia. I just did not want any clearance issues . Play it safe. And the 225/70/15 is almost the same dia as the stock 6.95-15, that was an optional tire/rim for the A100.

I have a set of the factory 15 rims that came on my van. I believe they are 6 in wide, and still had the bias ply tires on them. I wish I knew what size the tires were.

from what I found looking at sales brouche's on ebay. Using their zoom in feature. Most A100's came with 6.95-14. Optional size's were 6.95-15 (close to 225/70/15), and optional 8.15-15 (close to 215/75/15) . those close to sizes /as to close in diameter.
    6.95-15 &225/70/15=27.4" dia
    8.15-15&215/75/15= 27.7" dia.
This is what I've found out. It my or my not be 100% correct.

I would do that, but right now . my A pickup is up on jackstands , the brakes are being updated. So I can not back it out of the garage. As it sits, I could not get very good pictures, sorry.
