    Gas Leaking Empty Gas Leaking

Post by VanHoosierdaddies Tue Jan 19, 2016 11:09 pm

    Hello VV,

When I fill my tank up in my 62, I get gas leaking out of the bottom of the van. Seems to be leaking from somewhere on top of the tank. I read something about a vent tube, could this be where it would leak from? When not completely full, no leaking. Thanks.

Yes it's likely. The vent tube is in the center top of the tank. I assume you've checked the fill hose?

As Seth G said, the vent tube comes out of the top of the tank, goes across the top of the tank to the left rear corner of the van, goes up into the van behind the the tail light, turns around and goes back through the floor to vent out under the van.

These tubes get brittle over time and need to be replaced.

One other tip is to make sure you use a hose that is rated to handle gas. Don't use heater hose as it will rot quickly, because of gas. I think it is a 1/2 inch and swells to 5/8 at the u bend. I think you can stretch the 1/2 inch hose will stretch to fit. someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I hope this helps.

Thanks gents, I assume I have to drop the tank to replace?  I am pretty certain it isn't coming from the fill hose, too central to the tank where it is leaking. Also, my van is a 61, made a mistake in original post, not that it matters here.

I've had the vent tube come disconnected and leak when the tank was over 3/4 full.  I fixed it.
Then it started leaking again the same way, although slower.  This time it was the seal around the pick-up tube.  So, there's a couple possibilities.
