Re: Moving forward stepping back
I'm not sure, guessing a rod bearing, spuratic knock and miss, removed valve cover everything up top looks good. Disappointing been having a good time with it. Interior redone in 1970 fashion, I'll try another pic. 6000 watt inverter, lights a/c ,tv ,wet bar,
Set at a body shop for 14 months before I gave up and picked up. I'm determined now.

,,,you might try to pull each spark plug wire off when running and see if any cylinder changes the noise,,,,,

Re: Moving forward stepping back
If you are worried about pulling off spark plug wires, you are doing the engine a favor if you have a bad rod or main bearing,,,,,,if you disconnect the spark plug wire, you dont have an explosion in that cylinder,,,,but if you have an engine miss also,,,,,bad bearings dont cause that,,,,,,you need to take a compression test,,,,,,a leak down test will check the condition of the rings and valves,,,,,,you just want to collect all the clues, see if something shows up out of the ordinary,,,,,,,before you blame the engine and tear it down,,,,,,,,

Re: Moving forward stepping back
Well, I will be forwarding pics over the next few days, it totally pisses me off to tell this but beware! I bought a small mr gasket air breather, mounted on one barrel, it appears the stud that holds the chrome top on with wing nut has backed off and been sucked into the number 4 cylinder where it is either laying on top of more likely embedded into top of piston, Spark plug gap was crushed.
Hopefully it's not done to much damage. It ran for a very short time.

Re: Moving forward stepping back
So I take it there is no compression on #4,,,,,,,,,nothing really cant get past the valves and into the cylinder,,,,,,unless the valve breaks,,,,,you might just get by with a valve job,,,,,

Ouch! It squeezed through the valve and got nipped off? I doubt the whole stud got through to the cylinder? Do the valves open wide enough for a 3/16" diameter shaft or wing nut to fit through? Maybe it jammed the valve or broke the valve and that's what's inside the cylinder and mashed the plug? You won't know until you pull the head. A valuable lesson, but chalk it up to Sh*t happens, not your fault, freak thing, we've all had stuff like that happen, at least no one got hurt....

Re: Moving forward stepping back
I'm anxious to get the head off maybe tonight.
Hoping for the best. Ready to work on the still broke stuff not the already fixed.
Oh, well. Off top of your heads anyone know if 250 and 292 oil pans enter change or is the oil pump pick up to deep or just won't work at all?

Re: Moving forward stepping back
Heres a true story - I built a chev once -installed it in a 4 x 4 1947 jeep. Had a young mechanic install all the rockers & associated stuff. I made sure i had counted all rockers, balls & nuts!! before i had him do all. Comes tome & says - I need 1 more rocker nut! we searched everywhere- finally gave him another nut! Ran that jeep all over - a few years. that was in south texas - took it into canada with me -when i actually immigrated there in 1988! Was running it in a wonderful park one day. climbing hills & just enjoying that day - about 25 miles from camp!! Guess what?/ Found that rocker nut!it had fallen down & was on top of a valve all this time! finally went down into a cylinder & piston shoved that nut into the head & opened the water jacket area- overheating! Finally back to camp- removed the head & there it was! piston good -head replaced & away i went!! If that young mechanic had been there - Id fed him to the bears!!

Re: Moving forward stepping back
You can looked great! let me know if you plan another we will dominate the scene, not a lot of vans in these parts yet.
Well, that's what is left of stud, cylinder seems to be fine, head doesn't look hurt its at at a head shop
Being torn down to insure there are no more pieces. Looks like it was all in #4 but there was a odd scratch in #3 but no debris. Hoping for the best. I'll post pic of breather, if you are using, check your stud, locktite, smash threads double nut. Thanks for all the advice.
