Dual master cylinder conversion? Empty Dual master cylinder conversion?

Post by edfields Mon Aug 31, 2015 10:34 am

    Hi there.

Last week I had complete brake failure on my '64 A100.
Luckily I was going slow and was able to avoid hitting any cars, but it freaked me out pretty good since I was heading for the freeway.

The case was a hole in the LF brake line. I then discovered the line was
rubbing on the inner wheel when turned fully to the right.

I had always been aware of the risk of a single master cylinder system and don't want to run that risk again. Any well-documented dual master conversions I can study for the A100? I'm not well versed with brake systems.

San Francisco is a place a person REALLY needs brakes with all those hills,,,,,,,,,,,in 1967 they outlawed those single line suicide master cylinders, and if a person is still driving around on 50 year old brake hoses and lines, you, and anyone around you, are living on borrowed time........we use the master cylinder off 67-70 Chevy vans to upgrade our 64-66 Chevy vans with the single line,,,,,and since you should be changing the old brake lines anyway, you run 1 line from the master cylinder to a T fitting and then to each front brake hose, the other line on the master cylinder all the way back to the rear brake hose on the rear end,,,,,,now the question is DODGE GUYS,,,,,will a 67-70 dual line master cylinder just bolt right up or do you have to modify the bracket??

here is my Chevy parts list,,,,,,,those Napa armor wound brake lines dont need tubing benders to form them,,,,,,,,so those part numbers should work pretty good on a Dodge or Ford also,,,,,,,

I'm wondering the same - if there is a Dodge dual master cylinder that will bolt right up.

The A108 should have a dual master cylinder, but I'm guessing many things are different as it's a longer wheel base model.

Seems like this would be a standard upgrade on anything pre-67... Thanks for the Napa P/N's.

Hey dix - do you know if there was anything else to modify on the van for that later version?

I don't think so it should still fit in the same location.

Yes, this job can be done.  I did it on my 64 A100.  If you get the master cylinder listed above (which is the correct one), you will have to modify the sheet metal around the core support.  You will have to cut the opening so that the master cylinder passes through the metal to the outside of the core support.  Also, keep your brake line nut that is on the original master cylinder.  When you re flare your new lines (make DAMN sure that you DOUBLE FLARE your lines), use that nut for the front fitting on the master cylinder.  You will not have enough room for an adaptor.  This part of the job is a bit of a PITA, but doable.  Also, try to get a brake switch and bracket from a 68-70 A100.  That switch is a mechanical one; much easier than what they used in the 67.
    Hope this helps.

,,,that sure is a big help,,,,,,,,however,,,,,I am no big fan of having to double flare brake tubing,,,,,,so lets talk about that,,,,,,the stock tubing probably has 3/8" fittings,,,,,,,master cylinders are probably 1/2" or 9/16" so you need an adapter line or bushing,,,,,,,,do you have a picture of  the area that causes problems when you add a newer master cylinder on a Dodge?   On my Chevys, I use adapter bushings as well as adapter lines to get the fittings to match,,,,,,,,,,we like  to show  different choices so everyone can   decide what is right for them....

I ordered the dual master cylinder from Napa to see how it mounts up.

Thanks for all the info so far! Will check back once the part is in hand.

Awww...they are not so bad, Donivan.  With some practice, I've gotten pretty good at them.  That way, you can custom bend exactly what you need.  Less joints means less leaks.  I will try to get under there later in the week for a couple of pictures.
    Very Happy
