I'm just getting acquainted with the van, so I have a question. On the back barn doors when you open them the hinge appears that you can peer into the interior of the door meaning that there r gaps in the metal where the hinge apparatus enters the door. It seems as if rain etc can go right into these gaps. Is that the case? That's doesn't seem right. I'll look again tomorrow but does the old hinge design allow water (from rain or washing) to make its way into the interior of the doors?

Re: Door hinge daylight
Sorry pic uploaded sideways but the bottom of that pic is really the door side of the hinge the top of the pic is the body side of hinge. On the door side the horizontal gap between the top of the hinge and the door would seem to allow water to enter inside the door. Correct or incorrect?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Door hinge daylight
Thanks a lot. It's still ok after all these years. Just wanted to make sure that's how it worked. Never a great idea to direct water into the interior of a house or a car. Thanks!!!dix wrote:yeah if you seal them off the material will just crack,

Will this be a good area to caulk? Any tips on sealing little gaps like these?

Re: Door hinge daylight
I've seen this treated both ways, to remove all the factory sealer and paint everything with extra coats .
and what i did was to match what the manufacturer did , but my attempt did not work the paint cracked around the hinge, the steel door metal flexes and the hinge does not.
i know the vw cars and vans used a black premolded plastic or rubber that finished the area real clean
I have seen them on 2nd gen Chevy vans but i don't know if that was factory or a personal touch.

Re: Door hinge daylight
Yeah, the hinges on my van is probably where the paint is the worst. It's not all that bad though. I just don't want any water to get in from puddles, etc. Think caulking that gap would do the trick alright?
So you painted the sides of the hinges several times to make it real thick to cover the gap?
