Re: 1st gen fuel tank for chevy
the way the system works is 12 volts goes into the fuel gauge, through it, comes out the wire that connects to the sending unit,,,,,if you disconnect that wire and turn on the key, 12 volts runs through the gauge and pushes that needle past FULL,,,,,,,now if you touch that wire to the body, that stops the 12 volts and the gauge reads EMPTY,,,,,,thats not really how it works, but you get the idea of what you are looking for,,,,,,in reality, the sending unit is a variable resistor,,,,lets 30 ohms though so that limits the needle movement to the FULL mark, 15 for 1/2, and 0 ohms to drag the needle to EMPTY,,,,,so that 1st Gen gauge needs a sending unit that only has a limit of 0-30 ohms for it to be accurate,,,,a 2nd Gen gauge needs a 0-90 ohm sending unit,,,,,,,and all the other aftermarket and other models use all kinds of different values... but the gauge and sending unit have to match,,,,talk the same language so they understand each other,,,,,,,,so you exactly how much gas is in your tank,,,,,,,,

Re: 1st gen fuel tank for chevy
I bought a sender part # FG117A because it was easily modified to fit in my tank, it's a 0 to 90 ohm. So I tried adjusting it with the resister and potentiometer not really understand how it works thinking I could just follow the directions. I don't think I wired it correctly and I didn't have a high enough wattage on the resister or the potentiometer.
