65G hinge Rubber Empty 65G hinge Rubber

    Post by vrod64 Mon Jan 12, 2015 6:53 pm

Restoring and getting ready for paint. Will replace the hinge rubber .

Am I correct that the REAR, SIDE and Front DOORS have the exterior rubber seal ?

    Steele part # 60-0659-69

    $37 dollars for 4 seals.

Do I need 24 hinge seals ??...OUCH.

Thought I read newer GM vans used similiar rubber gaskets ?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    V

I am not 100% sure but I think that I read that the one's for the 3rd gens will work. Maybe someone can verify that they will?

I bought a sample of the later ones but they were bigger on the outside and I didn't think they looked as good as originals. After the paint was done I masked the paint off and sealed the hinges with black RTV. Took some time but I was happier with the result. Good luck. Jerry

Buy the set of 24 and cut 1/4 inch out of the centers for the front doors and use super glue to put them back together..The super glue volcanise's the rubber recommended by soft seal when I installed my windshield and rear rubbers on my 41 willys 10 years later and the glue is still holding..!!!..65G hinge Rubber 105_0810

This has been debated before....the original shop manual and old body panel repair books show a CAULK seal at the door hinges (seam sealer, Napa sells it in tubes), not a rubber gasket on 1st and 2nd? gen vans. The sealer was painted body color.  If your gaps are big enough, use the rubber seals after paint but IMHO they were not correct for a 1st gen and are too large for most of the joints.  Like 65 G10,  I simply used some paintable silicone caulk and it looks fine, white since my van is white. Some of my gaps were very thin and a rubber seal would not fit.

Vantasia, is your paint cracking around the hinges? I like the cleaner look as well, but it seems that without the rubber, the paint and caulk with crack over time.

No cracking, but the caulk gets soiled, I wipe it clean with some cleaner every now and then, but it seals out water for sure! Again, if I was painting the van, I would use seam sealer before painting like the factory, but afterwards, use RTV or any old caulk.

There are options (like everthing else on these vans) I did the use body caulking and the 3rd gen stick on ones. I didn't really like them.

So I just bought enough for 24. I didn't look and realise that the fronts where smaller. Bummer.
Oh well I will have extras to sell.

Because Clarks Corvair has the hinge gaskets in two sizes. I asked and they sent me an email with the measurments. this is for the Corvan.

The measurements on the inner hold for C9945 $8.35 each side door hinge grommet is 2 3/8" X 1/4"
    The C9946 $7.95 each rear door hinge measures 2 1/2" X 1/4"

I measure the hinges to be 2.25" and 2.5" since the front door body sheet metal is on an angle i figure the 2.25" one should pinch in and work.

    M1D

The hinges on the Suburmen barn doors are 2.5" also

Again, if you are pre-paint, that's the way to go and it takes paint well. Post paint, its a little messy, doesn't wipe off like caulk, very tacky, more like construction adhesive.
