Fuel delivery problem Empty Fuel delivery problem

Post by dulcimerbob Tue Sep 02, 2014 3:51 pm

Was headed toward town today and the &^&** van died on me . Seemed like fuel starvation thing. I crippled it back almost home and had it pulled in . I have tried to change the fuel filter but I cannot get the cannister off the pump. Frozen for years. I have soaked it in PB Blast to no avail. The engine seemed to start gasping for fuel when I floored it to get some speed up on the highway. Yes, it has gas. When it sat for a while it started up. Filter, pump or what? Need help.
    Thanks Question Question

Any way to get fuel pump without the canister and run an inline filter?

You could install an electric fuel pump.

I'm in the same boat with my 240. I'm trying small stuff (fuel filter, filter) before going the drop tank and fuel line route. I'm sure it'll help some, but ultimately these old tanks are nasty inside! One other thing I'm dealing with, is a frankenstein carb that I had put on (new carb from god knows where with electric choke) that might be starving fuel. I drove it down the road while a friend shot it with carb cleaner and it lunged out of its lazy struggle a good bit each time....

Check your vent hose to the tank . Mine had a mud dauber nest in it. Cleared it , got fuel then but this is not my current problem . I ordered a new pump tonight 35.99 at Oreilly's . Comes with a filter and a new canister that's not frozen Cool

I got my 66 Falcon when it was 8 years young. 240 and got vapor lock every 10-15 miles so the owner sold it cheap. BUT it was the fuel pickup sock in the tank, after cooling off it would start from I guess the crap on the filter fell off. I had another old car do this too, Both had what looked like gas mud in them.
I've had a 289 for a while now and 2 tanks, one with an electric booster pump. I again this spring replaced all the rubber fuel lines and filters but not the 30 year old engine pump. The electric pump got me got me home when the old one quit a week later.

Will an early Mustang fuel pump fit a 240/6 ?

I think the pump rod is different.

Thanks for all the replies . Turned out to be a collapsed fuel line from the tank
to the pump. Rerouted it with good results. BTW, does anyone know what tool to use to remove the fp canister. I've tried and can't get it loose.

the cannister is sometimes coroded on the pump!! I have destroyed a few in removal!! Channel locks or even a smaller oil filter type wrench might do. Yet i also have had to just get a new pump & cannister also sometimes!! affraid

Since you don't have an electric pump I would replace the old one asap! That big filter is better than the small filters. A small oil filter wrench or improvised tool would work, If your not ready to replace the the pump.

I'm going through the same troubleshooting above- Anyone have a lead on where a new electric fuel pump and filter can be found? Something a NAPA might actually have? In the meantime, if I CAN get the canister off my original, is that filter metal, and cleanable? Doing all the small stuff before the tank eventually comes out....
