Re: King pin kit on Macs...
Judging by the size of the grease ball on each side of the axle, I'm gonna say these are probably the original king pins. When I took it to the car wash to blast off all of the mucky muck, it was so old and tough that I could barely cut through to the metal, even with the water blasting it from 1" away.. it took 5$ in quarters to get to where I could see the bearings and the shine on the zerx fittings...

LMFAO,,,,,,,,, always the same old, same old,,,,,,, no big deal,,,,, Just saying that in this thread that these bushings need to be honed or reamed and that people doing them at least know what they will or should have done,,,,, People neeeeeeeeeeed to know whats going on in this thread at least,,,

Re: King pin kit on Macs...
So Vic, is that reamer of yours adjustable or 1 size fits all,,,,,what are you shooting for on clearance,,,.001? how much clearance is too much? Are those kingpin shafts all EXACTLY the same diameter?

Re: King pin kit on Macs...
From all that I have done and measured they were identical in OD. however even that would make no difference as the bushings are under sized anyways. Suppose this was a way of making sure that they were all done to a closer tolerance??? Don't know but honing is MUCH better and yes, I ask for .002 MAXIMUM as in any thing like this they will only wear in and get stuck unless you don't lube them at all. Talking about some major pressure exerted and if fit too loose then even worse.
The reamers are the adjustable type and come in any size you would want. Years ago lots of major threads and conversations in regards to borrowing someone's and all kinds of people posting ones on EBay for sale.
Having done all kinds of bushing work its been my experience that the reamer is far less accurate as well as not as smooth a job after wards. The cutters will never leave as good or as accurate finish on them as when done on a honing machine like the Sunnen type. The stones get dressed and the dressing mandrel for the stones constantly getting reversed when used to prevent any taper or differences worked into it. That way it keeps the stones true and the same from one side to the other when used... JUST my experience and so I do all the press work myself and then have a shop with hone machine do them for me.

Re: King pin kit on Macs...
Ok. So, I can't really trust my cheap calipers on the first try. But I believe the pins from MAC's to be the right .661 measurement. I've measured and re measured and I have decided it true. They are as advertised.

I just did these and had TED grind the groove so I know for sure its correct. I also found shims under the thrust bearing not good sorted it out and wheels are super tight. John Los Angeles, CA

Re: King pin kit on Macs...
So what is the problem now,,,,,,,does the shaft fit tight in the axle,,,,,,,is the lock pin in there tight,,,,,or is the slop in the bushings???? those bushings probably like to be .0005 larger than the shaft after they are pressed in,,,,,,,,did they get honed or reamed wrong? Or did someone mess with the spindle hole size????

Re: King pin kit on Macs...
I did not line the groove up exactly and get to do it again monday after the machine shop swaps the bushings or hones them again. I prefer a fresh start. Going to Vics today for king pin set #2 good news is I now what was wrong and will fix it just a little bit of a bummer

Hey. I have a question. Can you get the brakes off the steering knuckle without completely dismantling them? I'm in the planning stages and that was something I was wondering.
