Ball park valve adjustments Empty Ball park valve adjustments

    Post by Lance0538 Sun Apr 27, 2014 6:07 am

Alright so I just got my engine back from getting rebuilt.(144) Can anyone help me with an initial valve adjustment. I was trying it the way off classicinlines.com. basically it said rotate the crankshaft until the exhaust valve starts to open then adjust that intake valve by tightening until the pushrod wont spin, then backing it off a quarter turn. Pretty much the same when the intake goes down and is almost all the way back up, adjust the exhaust.

I have used this method before on the engine and it worked fine but now i can tighten the nut all the way down and the pushrod will still spin. Is there a better way for an initial valve adjustment? Hope I made sense. Thank.

The 144 should have solid lifters. That adjustment only works with hydraulic lifters. You need to set these with a feeler gauge.

Like Twin said, just set at .018 get it running and warm then readjust. Usually the first adjustment will have one or two valves that make noise so you will want to warm it up and get the clatter out. Please understand that solid cams are noisy by design so do not be tempted to set lash tighter than .017 or.018 or you will burn the valves. Happy Vanning,
