    Adjustable Rockers? Empty Adjustable Rockers?

Post by Das Boot Fri Apr 25, 2014 9:38 am

I was planning to pull my 170 this weekend when I found a garage kept 200 out of 67 mustang for cheap - I'm picking it up tonight. Can I use the rockers out of my 170 in the 200? I'd like to keep the option of adjustable rockers without buying new if I don't have to. Thanks.

Yes, just make sure to keep the push rods. The 200 has ball/ball ends and the 170 has ball/cup. I used to put the adjustables on 200's to take the rocker clatter out. You will sling oil when you adjust but with the engine running, back each rocker out until you hear it clicking and then tighten 1/2 turn.

Thanks 66! Does it matter if the engines have different lifters or not. I haven't had a chance to look yet, just wondering if it mattered if one had solid and the other hydraulic. Thanks again!

No, but,you want to keep the lifters matched to the cam. The cams are ground different and you never want to mismatch lifters as this will cause cam failure. You just get adjustable hyd lifters. Just swap the rocker shaft and pushrods and adjust per above post and you will have a smooth, quiet engine. Early V8 Fords had adjustable rockers, on hyd cams, but were discontinued in the 60's.
This will not work on later, high deck, 250's as the pushrods are too short, so remove and compare a pushrod from each engine before you get started.
