mines mounted in an overhead area. still use it too on traveling. truckers still use  them mostly & there are some very nice units  today -incorportaing new tecknology & great features.I like to use it to find places to stay & eat when traveling=truckers know  about every place that doesnt cost an arm & a leg!! Especially =off the interstates!! cheers

heres an old story - in the 70's when i got my 1st one = i hooked a linear amp 150 watt & could over power the next cars radio going down the road!! What i said in the mile came thru the other cars radio!!!!!!!!! Had some great times when the other cars were full of Girls!! Girls= affraid affraid affraid affraid Twisted Evil

Back in the day your van was built cb radios had fewer channels, 40 channel radios and side band came much later. Back then you had to have permits to use them. My suggestion would be talking van to van to buy a cobra 25 pre china radio, check the back it should say made in the Philippines. The China radios had a real tinny sound to them. Also the earlier 25's had uniden circuit boards. Take it to a reputable cb shop and have a 2sc1969 final installed, and tuned up. You can also add talk back features if your interested. As far as linear amps the radio would have to be tuned to whatever amp your driving. modulators or pre amps work good for talking close by and will help you step or (talk over top of) other radios in the area. Unless your wanting to talk long distance then you go with a linear amp but they don't work well close up.

I have seen some mounted to the front of the dog house and the mic bracket mounted to the dash. That seemed to work good. But I would prefer the overhead console idea myself. Keeps your eyes on the road better while changing channels. My radio is a 40 channel Cobra that was boosted and works great. Twin whips out the back. Damn, I think I will dig it out and see how it looks...lol. Thanks for posting...brings back fun memories.

Also your antenna needs to be adjusted, is called your swr. Unless you use a Francis whip and 18 foot of coax. Your local cb shop should be able to adjust that for you. @chopper tom What kind of chopper do you ride?
